Breast calcifications

I went in for a mammogram and ultrasound.  The ultrasound showed a lump that looks like a fibroadenoma apart from I'm 51 so I'm not sure if that's possible? Has anyone else had a fibroadenoma in their 50s or older? I had a biopsy done on this the other day. The mammogram showed  calcifications on my right breast that are 'indeterminate' so I'm going for biopsy tomorrow. Apparently they were on my mammogram from 2.5 yrs ago but they weren't concerned then. I think there are more now. Feeling nauseous from the worry.

  • Hello,

Really sorry I can't give you advice,  but I had a mammogram and ultrasound and biopsy yesterday due to calcification and some cysts in the left breast (I was there for the right one!)

The Dr said not to worry....obviously I am,  just as you are.  Said its very common.

I'm 42 and similar to you,  they weren't as many or as big as the mammogram 2 years ago.

You aren't on your own,  thinking of you xx

  • Did you have stereotactic biopsy using a mammogram then? That's what I'm having tomorrow. Any idea how long you have to wait for results? Thinking of you too, thanks.

  • Hello,  no,  I had an ultrasound guided biopsy, then they left markers inside my breast and did an xray so they knew where they were looking for the cysts and calcifications.

I have 10 days to wait for my results appointment.

Good luck to you and I hope you find peace whilst you wait xx

  • Hi again, I'm back from the biopsy which wasn't too bad. I was a bit concerned (they were too!) that they'd have difficulty doing it as I'm small breasted. But they got what they needed.  Can just feel anaesthetic wearing off so probably going to get some ibuprofen soon! I have a telephone appointment for end of next week when I should get results.  I've also just got a copy of the letter that goes to my GP from my mammogram  the other day. It says there is a small cluster of microcalcifications. Do you know how yours are arranged ie a group, groups, scattered, etc?

  • Hi Elsie,

I had stereotactic biopsy guided by Mammogram due to calcifications back in January.

Results took two weeks - I think this time frame is fairly standard.

The waiting for procedures and results is the worst! The biopsy itself wasn't too bad although they squeezed the life out of my boob doing further mammograms beforehand! They anaethetise the area where the biopsy is taken and that part didn't hurt at all.

Wishing you all the best for your results.

  • Sorry - my last reply was a bit late!! Hadn't seen your udpdate.

Glad the biopsy went ok. I would expect to be a little bruised for a week or so but hopefully not too painful for you.

    xx

  • Hi PositiveT

Thanks for the support. Felt quite calm after the biopsy, probably the relief of it being done. Almost forgot it wasn't all over, now the wait for results.....Now a little concerned that  my wait seems shorter than yours, as though they're fairly sure it's bad and rushing it through!  Do you mind if I ask what your results were?

  • Hey!

Like I said before the waiting can be horrendous but try not to read anything into the time frame for your results. It will vary depending on when the MDT meet and many other factors so please don't assume that sooner equals bad news.

Microcalcificatioms are often nothing to worry about although mine turned out to be DCIS (Ductal carcinoma in situ). I had never heard of this before I started googling, it's sometimes referred to as pre-invasive breast cancer because even though cancer cells are present they are contained within the milk ducts and are not invading the breast tissue. It's not been easy but DCIS is curable and having had surgery it's all gone!!!

I really hope that yours turn out to be nothing of concern.

    Hang in there! X

  • It's great to hear you're through it PositiveT. How are you joannemcc?
