Bowel cancer worries - help

Hello all,

I feel so terrified that I have bowel cancer.  Although I am 30, I have ulcerative colitis (have done for 10yrs!).  Your risk of BC increases significantly after 10yrs of having UC.  Anyway, Lately I've been having a deep dull lower back ache, it isn't always there but intensifies just before I pass stool.  The deep ache radiates down to my bum too.  I've been having anal pain, and have had constipation and diarrhea on and off.  I feel absolutely drained/shattered every day (sleeping well so shouldn't be feeling tired!).  And not forgetting the mucus.  Usually I would put this down to a UC flare but this just feels difficult, something feels different.  Previous flares I haven't had this lower back ache or have felt so fatigued every second of the day.

I genuinely have self diagnosed myself and am worried sick.  I have contacted my IBD doctor who said he'd arrange a sigmoidoscopy.  But the wait for it will be unbearable :(.

If you have been diagnosed with BC, what were your symptoms?

I hope people see this so they can comment and we can chat.

  • Hello worried9211,

Poor you, it is normal to be worried but try not to self diagnose yourself if you can or it will only make you worry even more. You did the right thing in contacting your IBD doctor and I hope that you won't have to wait too long to get some definite answers.

There are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news. Try if you can to resist the temptation to look anything up online and self-diagnose as this will only exacerbate your anxieties. Keep busy and distracted and focused on doing things you enjoy as this will help you pass the time while you are waiting.

Everything tightly crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing of concern!

    Best wishes,
