Deep breast dimple after clear mammogram and ultrasound

Hi guys, I'm just looking for some advice....a bit of a "what would you do" scenario!

so, I'm 38, and  4 weeks ago I was at the breast clinic following an urgent referal for several breast dimples that appeared when I raise my arm. I had a mammogram, ultrasound and manual breast exam and told everything was all clear! Woohoo!
But the consultant gave me a follow up appointment for 3 months, just to be sure (yeah, that confused me, but hey-ho).

Anyway, I've since found a new dimple that only appears when I flex my chest muscles tightly, but this dimple is much deeper than my others! It sucks in about 1cm and creates a Z shaped puckering effect.

I can't say 100% if this is new, because the pose I have to do to get it to appear, is not something I've ever really done before. But the dimple looks so dramatic and scary!

I guess what I'm asking is, because I've just had clear scans, can I be reassured and just wait for my follow up which is now 8 weeks away, or should I get this checked out more urgently?
Im so confused, my anxiety is so heightened that I can't think straight to make a rational decision!

  • It's great to hear all your tests came back clear _driftwoodhearts_ although I'm sorry about the dimple you've found since then and for the worry this is causing.

I can see you asked our nurses about this a few days ago and I hope the advice they gave will help but hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar position will offer their thoughts and advice to you soon as well.

In the meantime, I hope these tips will help keep your anxiety at bay and that this dimple will turn out to be no cause for concern.

    Kind regards,

  • Can I just ask how this went for you? I'm in a similar position where I had a breast dimple but my scan came back clean. I've been told to keep an eye on it and of the dimple gets any bigger then I need to come in for an MRI.

  • Hi Redhen.
The anxiety was too much and I couldn't wait the 8 weeks for my follow up appointment, so I rang the consultants secretary and they gave me an appointment for 2 weeks later.
The consultant had a very brief look at the dimple, and said that he believed it was caused by the skin being attached to the chest wall (I assume he meant by a ligament) and that the skin is simply being pulled when I tense my chest muscle. But to be sure he did a Fine Needle Biopsy. He just stabbed a random part of the dimple and took only one sample. It took3 weeks to get the results via post, which came back as "normal fatty breast tissue" with yet another follow up scheduled for 3 months.
Not gonna lie, just knowing that i haven't been discharged  is enough to keep my anxiety in overdrive. Im checking the dimples every day, noticing the most minute changes. I have my next appointment with the consultant in 3 weeks, and I've no idea what to expect! I haven't been told I might need an MRI?!

Could I ask what your journey has been?

  • Of course! I went in to my GP after finding a dimple on my right breast. I also had some itching and flaking on the right nipple which the GP gave me steroid cream for. She agreed she saw the dimple (I took loads of photos as sometimes it was hard to see in certain lights and could only be seen with my arm raised). When doing a breast exam she had me lean forward after which she said "ahh there it is. There's a lump there". She immediately referred me to the breast clinic but told me it could be an 8 week wait due to my age. I decided I couldn't wait that long and so booked a private appointment and was seen within two days.

When I was there I had a male consultant who examined my breast (although I must admit it didn't feel quite as thorough as my female GPs examination) and said he couldn't see a dimple or feel a lump. It was only after I showed him the photos that he believed that it was there. They did an ultrasound on my right breast and said everything came back clear but the dimple was a cause for some concern. I was told to keep monitoring and if it got any bigger I needed to go back through the NHS and possibly get an MRI to make sure it was nothing. They didnt want to do a biopsy as they didn't want to damage potentially healthy tissue.

If I'm honest I wish they'd just told me it was a cyst or something because then I could be sure it was nothing. The fact that they've said your ultrasound was clear "but" has put my mind in a spin. Also the fact one doctor said they found a lump but the other didn't is playing on my mind. I am also now frantically monitoring it but at this point I'm not sure if I'm imagining it getting bigger or if it actually is. I'm considering getting a second opinion. Maybe I'm just being a hypochondriac (frankly I hope I am) but something just doesn't feel right.

I'm glad your scan and biopsies also came back clear! Hope all goes well at your follow up!

  • Thank you for sharing your story! I share so much of the feelings you're describing! It's like we're left in limbo with a lot of doubt hanging over us. I am also the same about being unsure if it is getting deeper, or if my anxiety is just tricking me.
I have a week til my follow up, and I don't know what to say as I can't say for sure if the dimple has changed or not. I'm so frightened of being discharged with this doubt hanging over me, but equally scared of being subjected to more tests and more waiting.

  • Hi,

I have noticed a dimple and have done nothing but bawl my eyes out since apotting it.

It started my left breast has a sore lump, my dr says it is likely to be a cyst and not to worry give it 2/3 weeks.

In the bath last night, I noticed a very unusual line on my right breast. I have b9 lumps off to the side of it.

Anyways, I been feeling around and noticed a little tiny "shot" lump right between the b9 ones.

    Raised arms.  Nothing.

    Lean forward. Nothing.

Sitting down and pushing boob bottom up, and there it is, a dimple.  Its not really in as such, but can feel a slight dent when run finger over it.

Once I drop my boob there is nothing.

I have appt with GP but I am convinced now.

What did yours turn out to be ?

  • Hi Cottonclowns.,

you're doing the right thing by getting it checked out, but please remember that 9 out of 10 referrals to the breast clinic end up being benign. The fact that the dimple is not visible when you raise your arms and lean forward is also a very promising sign!
The breast consultant thinks my dimples are caused because my ligaments are attaching the skin to my chest muscle, and causing the dimples to appear when my chest muscle moves. I've had a mammo and ultrasound (6 months ago), biopsy (4 months ago) and two additional reviews with the breast consultant (4 months ago and 2 months ago). He has now moved me from 3 monthly reviews to 6 monthly. I'm still terrified though. I've had to start on antidepressants because of the stress this is causing me.
I hope you can get the reassurance you need very soon!
