Skin Cancer Results Delayed

Hi guys,

I'm posting in here as I can't seem to find any previous posts that have covered this, which I'm taking as a positive? Kinda?

I had a rather enlarged mass on my back, have done for a while, however at the end of Feb this year the skin had begun to peel. Now, this mass started originally as a small red spot on my lower back, and over 2.5 years of constant picking and scratching, was now similar to a Blueberry in size, and it's fleshy, translucent red colour had changed to a shade of purple. It was soft to the touch at all times and certainly had no firmness unless really pressed.

I was put on the 2WW and had my appointment and excision on the 29th of March. The doc assured me it was nothing but a large Cherry Angioma, that perhaps had become a granuloma because of, well, my constant bothering it. In any case, the surgeons looking also agreed with their colleague and it was removed, I have a cracking scar too.

They told me they were going to make it a green notice, and not a red notice. However, they stuck with the red and a 6-8 week urgent turnaround. We're at the cusp of week 6 now so I gave them a call on the off chance, to see if they'd heard, when I was told my sample had been sent to Leeds (I'm from Hull) and it was now a 12-16 week turn around.

Has anyone had their results delayed by double before? Has anyone had their result sent to another hospital before, if so, what is the general consensus of the outcome?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

  • Hello LiamC26 and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

Poor you that's an awfully long time to have to wait for your results! I am not sure why they have had to send your sample to Leeds but I hope that you will not have to wait all this time to hear back from them.

Hopefully you will hear from other members on this forum who have had the same thing happen to them and they will come and share their experience with you. You could perhaps try and call the hospital just to double check what the timeframe for receiving these results will be.

I am keeping everything crossed for you that you hear back soon and that it all turns out to be fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks Lucie,

I did speak to an old friend of mine who actually works in a pathology lab, he explained the process as that Hull Hospitals may not actually have the sufficient equipment to complete the tests required. So they could have been prepared, and then sent onto the hospital in Leeds who have a much more advanced Pathology suite. They'll then be batch tested and the reports should come back.

I'm rationalising it as "So many doctors and surgeons have seen, and confirmed that this is just a traumatic Angioma/Granuloma, that they will more than likely be testing to prove the absence of cancer, than the presence of cancer" it's helped.

Knowing what kind of Melanoma mimic these two things however is slightly anxiety inducing, but I'm sure I'd have displayed some signs of severe progression 2.5 years after it first revealed itself.

I'll be sure to keep this updated with anything I hear! :)

  • What you are saying makes total sense and you're right to be rationalising it as much as you can. I can completely understand why you are feeling anxious though and I really hope you get these results very soon.

    Everything tightly crossed for you!

  • Hi Liam,

I am on week 6 post-op waiting for histology results from a lump excisional biopsy I had done. I wasn't given any time frame or any follow up appointment for that  matter. It's pants! I wasn't even given any information about what the lump might be after it was removed - my discharge paperwork just says lump to be diagnosed! I have been on to hospital a few times to see if any info is back, last time I was told that it was still being processed. It's all very good people saying no news is good news - I say no news is no news!  You are lucky you have got the information you have. I'd say you have a good hospital.

I hope things turn out well for you, and I would say they are being super thorough, so they won't miss anything. It's no fun waiting that's for sure!

  • Hi Songbird,

I've just called the Dermo Clinic this morning and the results are in!

However, they've said an appointment will be made and I'll hear from them when to come in. I've read mixed reviews of people saying that they do actually get people in to discuss negative tests, whereas I though they'd just call you if it was good news.

In any case, I'm on the final stretch now to knowing. I'm just waiting for my legs to start working after that phone call, as it's all very real now.

Hope your results have either come back with the all clear, or if not that they do come back with good news.

    Thanks

  • Hi Liam,

No my results are not in. I have called yet again - still being 'processed' so I have no idea. I am beyond sick of this! I am going to have to do the PALS route after all. I haven't even had the chance to speak to someone medical - I feel very fobbed off to be honest.

  • Hi Songbird,

Just a quick update. I called the Dermo Outpatient this morning and they've told me I've been discharged. I've had no letter, or phone call to say I'm all clear, and I don't know if I'd have ever received one. In any case, I'm taking this to mean my tests were negative. What an anti-climax to near 16 weeks of suffering.

I hope you've got on well with your results, and I hope the result was the one you wanted.

    Many thanks

  • Hi Liam,

I actually got PALS involved in the end - and yes mine turned out to be benign, although I asked to be given the results (ie what kind of thing it was) (still waiting for the letter) as I have had another lump start to form futher down from the original one. It's good to know it's OK - but it is NOT OK to have to wait for such a long time for a result. Weirdly if you take your pet to a vet for similar tests you never wait more than a couple of weeks! What's that about???!!!  What this has taught me is that my local hospital is in a really bad way. They send their scans to India. They use locum surgeons and they have no path lab to speak of - I found out my tissues sat for a month before being sent to some private lab to be tested before being sent back to have the results done. I really doesn't inspire confidence in them. Next time I have anything remotely worrying I will be going private.

If you want your proper results you have to ask for them - or you could ask your GP to tell you.

Pleased everything worked out well for both of us - but being treated this way is really not caring or professional.
