Lung cancer

Hi,

Am petrified I have lung cancer. I gave up smoking about 6 months ago and think I found it too easy but am still using an ecig. I have read that finding it easy happens when you already have cancer?

I have noticed a small amount of blood in sputum once in January and again today but don't really cough more feel constantly phlegm in throat.

I am always achy but never in same place for long.

No weight loss or change in appetite.

I have booked a private CT scan so just waiting but my anxiety levels have gone through the roof.

Any thoughts?

  • Hello Extraanxious,

I am definitely no medical expert but I would not have thought there would be a link between finding it easy to give up smoking and having lung cancer. If this concerns you, do ask your GP though about it and don't hesitate to express how anxious this is making you feel. I think it's a remarkable achievement that you have managed to stop smoking and that you haven't found it too difficult so well done!

Regarding your symptoms, I hope you can have these investigated fully soon and that you have spoken to your doctor about the blood you saw once in January and that feeling of having phlegm in your throat. The CT scan will no doubt shed some light on what is going on and I hope you won't have to wait long to find out more.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be as there are so many things that could be causing these issues. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. There are useful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • I have had my CT scan this morning, so now just need to wait for results and try to stop googling. I have noticed no further blood. Does this become frequent if it's cancer?

  • Hello Extraanxious,

Sorry I don't have the medical expertise to answer your question but hopefully you will get some definite answers very soon and the results from your CT scan. It's a good idea to resist the temptation to Google - even though it's really hard to do so as this will only make you feel worse.

I hope you get some clarity on this very soon!
