Super fast referral after cervical polyp got us terrified

Hi,

My wife had a well woman check up & they found a cervical polyp. The nurse at GP said that she should get the senior practice nurse to have a look at a subsequent appointment. That never happened so wife chased it. In meantime her full bloods taken at time were OK.

She never saw the senior nurse. That was maybe 4-5 weeks back.

This morning the local hospital called with a referral to ultrasound & consultant gynae NEXT Week!

This seems mega fast for something that seemed a non issue...

Any thoughts anyone?

  • I completely understand how scary this can be. Two months ago I had a pap smear and the nurse (who only spoke French) typed into google translate that I had a cancerous polyp. I subsequently saw a specialist and it was indeed a 1cm polyp, although he stressed that it looked like healthy tissue and was almost 100% sure it was benign. As a matter of course the sample was sent for histology and it was completely normal. My gynaecologist had stressed that in  99% of cases most cervical polyps are benign. Because I had no bleeding or related symptoms he seemed confident.

I am sure it just took time for her to be registered in the system, and now the appointment has come through. It is pretty standard procedure for them to do an ultrasound and this just seems like they are being thorough. In my case, even though I was scared to have the surgical removal and biopsy, in the long run it was such a relief because the 'what-ifs' disappeared.

My Dad had a benign skin growth on his hand recently and he was convinced it was cancer. They called him for a referral within less than a week, even though they had said it wasn;t melanoma. We were all panicked because his appointment came through so quickly, but when he spoke to the consultant they said there had been several cancellations and that is why he got in quickly. In other words, best not to surmise (easier said than done I know). And the good news is that cervical polyps, almost always, are benign.

Sending you both all the best.

  • Thanks for the reply, really appreciate it.

We're just concerned as she's early 50s & menopausal so has irregular bleeding etc. She's had some clear mucus discharge but I read that's expected with polyps. Just freaked as we have a bit of history here. All sorted but enough to trigger big worries again, especially with a phone call...

She's fit & healthy and bloods plus smear (HPV only) were clear so fingers crossed.

    Thanks again.

  • If anything, that seems like you've had to wait. Certain cancer referrals are done via a 2 week pathway. When i say "cancer" referrals, that includes stuff that they aren't 100% sure about and just need to take a belts and braces approach, in case.

So i wouldn't be overly worried or concerned about the time frame. The only way most solid tumours can be diagnosed is via a biopsy. Scans, bloods etc etc, don't really tell them anything other than what you currently know. So don't be shocked if she gets told she may need a biopsy, it's what they do as to confirm if it's good or bad. The majority get told good news.

  • Thank you.

Yes, we seem to be somewhere between urgent & non urgent. As mentioned, original "it's nothing but needs a look" from GP nurse then a phone call from hospital & fast appointment. In a daft way we were hoping to be reassured (I know it's daft) by a longish wait.

We'll see I guess but thanks for context.

  • You couldn't make this up.

Wife originally seen in March in well woman clinic. cAs described here, polyp spotted & told nothing to worry about. They said they'd follow up.

Nothing back til che chased in late Apr. Bloods & HPV smear fine.

Had phone call from gynae saying that they were sorting a referral.

...Now, just had letter saying this is 2 week wait with appt this Thu to exclude cancer!!!!!!!!!

Needless to say this has really thrown us. An urgent 2ww referral after only a nurse saw her in March & said nothing to worry about??
