Thyroid biopsy

Hi so iv never done this before, but I'm really dealing with my problem alone at the minute as my partner and family work late,so it's just me and my thoughts iv been told I have too have a emergency 2ww biopsy of a thyroid nodule on my neck it feels quite big when I'm lay down and slightly noticeable by others,iv been experiencing a lot of symptoms that you would get with an over active thyroid, but also my face gets really flushed and I have constant pain in my stomach and alot of trips too the toilet I feel so worn out and tired and my neck feels very stiff and achy all the time, and the sweating is really embarrassing, does this all sound bad as I'm worried it might be cancer, but never want too say the word but my doctor hasn't really gone into detail about the ultrasound or why I'm having the biopsy, and I'm scared with nobody too speak too about it because obviously nobody has an answer or experience in this (thank god) anyway just wondered what people think and if this sounds like something other than the worst

  • If you have a nodule on your thyroid, it is the norm to have an ultrasound and a biopsy of it. The fact that you have a nodule is basically why you are having the biopsy. I think there are some cases where the ultrasound rules out cancer, but those are, I think, a pretty small minority. Generally, a biopsy is needed. The vast majority of thyroid nodules are benign - I think about 90% - 95%. Only a small number are cancer and I don't think there is any great difference symptom-wise between those that are cancer and those that are not. The biopsy is usually the only way to tell.

Your symptoms, by the way, do not sound like thyroid cancer symptoms. Generally, thyroid cancer is pretty asymptomatic and when it does cause symptoms, they tend to be more things like pain in the neck, a cough, difficulty swallowing. I doubt pain in the stomach or trips to the toilet would have anything to do with it. I guess they might be caused by other thyroid problems, but it is more likely they are a result of the stress you are under over this or completely unrelated. Nor have I heard of sweating or a flushed face being symptoms of thyoid cancer.

So I doubt any of those mean anything either way. The only things that sound like they could be thyroid cancer are the nodule and the ache and stiffness in your neck and those would mean a maybe 5% chance of thyroid cancer? The odds are very highly against it.

Also, even if it is thyroid cancer, thyroid cancer isn't exactly what you are probably thinking when you hear the word "cancer". For a start, the most common forms have a near 100% survival rate, especially if the '86 in your username is your year of birth. Among younger patients (which means under about 50), there isn't even a stage 3 or 4 for the two most common forms. You are either stage 1 (almost everybody) or if it has spread outside the neck (pretty rare), you are stage 2. Stage 1 has a survival rate...I think over 99%. They also don't use chemotherapy or radiotherapy, so honestly, worst case scenario is really having your thyroid removed.

I had thyroid cancer two years ago and basically was diagnosed in November, had my thyroid removed on the 6th of January and went back to work a month later and just...continued with my life as normal.

  • Thanks for your reply, makes me feel better and so glad too hear your better, yeah the symptoms you described the pain and difficulty swallowing iv had for a while but then didn't really do much and then when I had my ultrasound It came back benign, so I was relieved but then I got referred for another ultrasound and that's when they said I needed the emergency biopsy, and plus I wasn't getting any better no energy constant fatigue so I then started too worry but your reply has helped thanks again

  • Just a thought if u been tested for parasites a friend had similar situation tape worm was cause of her misery which go over looked .. Goodluck

  • I haven't actually, I will be looking into other stuff too see what is causing it, the doctor sent the referral yesterday and I have received an appointment straight away so hopefully no long now, then once this is good I'll have a look into other things, thanks for your reply.

  • Hi [@Jaynine86]‍ I just wondered if you’ve had your biopsy. Mine is grade 3a which is still a bit inconclusive but surgery, within 4 months to remove half the thyroid, has been recommended. All a bit of a waiting game!
