Anxious Colonoscopy Results

Hi,

Please could you share your experiences of Colonoscopy findings? I have had Crohns Disease for 15 years and a few weeks ago had my first Colonoscopy since 2018. I have had bleeding off/on the past couple of years.

I am now in week 3 of waiting on my results, tried following up a few times and been advised they are not back yet. They took 24 biopsies, and 12 in one place (Cecum) alone as they found a "Large Pedunculated ?" at the Appendix Orifice. I am really worried I had 12 biopsies in one site alone and they are not sure if it is a polyp. I also know they have found a Stricture elsewhere too.

Is 12 biopsies in one site of an organ normal?

Any support welcome.

  • Hi KB18;

    I'm sorry to hear about the wait for your results and likewise, how you are feeling. I hope I can help a little. I had a colonoscopy last March; 12 biopsies were taken, several small polyps were removed and a large growth was found. I was booked in to have this removed via EMR as a urgent case. I'm about to have my 5th colonoscopy this year and had multiple biopsies taken at each one. I waited a long time for results despite being told it would be 2-4 weeks; when I finally got them months later, there was a sentence in there that said 'big delays in pathology; sorry about that'. I thought it was poor to be honest - communication is still not great from endoscopy; for example, I'm told a consultant must do my latest colonoscopy but haven't been given a reason why. However,  - and here's the reassurance for you, I hope - everything is coming back precancerous so far.  When I had the colonoscopy before this one a few months ago and pointed out my lack of results from the previous 3, the consultant told me if they had found anything sinister, I would have been told very quickly.

    I can't speak for every Hospital or system, but I have learned over time to trust that, whether right or not, the hospital I am referred to are very slow at getting results back to me but should there ever be a reason to give me bad news, they would not linger.

    I wish you all the best and hope you hear soon.

  • Hi Pamelia,

    Thank you for sharing your experience and sorry to hear you have had to go through all of this. I hope your next Colonoscopy is ok. I am still waiting for my results. I hoped I would have heard something by now given they took 24 biopsies and it is a worry. I know I have stricture too.

    I don't know if they could do an EMR with my situation as the large '?' or large polyp is near the appendix orifice which I hear could be a complex situation.

    I am now just trying to keep busy and stay away from Dr Google for a little while and try and distract myself with other things.

    Thank you for your kind wishes and sending them to you x
