I just wanted to write this incase it can help anyone else in a similar position.
I was recalled for further assessment following a routine mammogram. With 3 generations of family history of breast cancer I was convinced that I would be getting bad news. At the assessment I had a further cross sectional mammogram, physical examination and ultrasound, and all was fine. There were possible differences when comparing my last mammogram and this is why they wanted to do further tests, but after these tests there was no cause for concern.
I had many sleepless nights waiting for the appointment going through all the ' what ifs' . I think the most sensible piece of advice I read was ' it's not cancer until you're told it's cancer' There are a myriad of reasons for getting recalled so try not to assume the very worst ( far easier said than done I know)
I am very lucky that I can now move on. I know not everyone will get the positive outcome I did and my heart goes out to them. But if you are waiting for a further assessment, go gently on yourself, and try not to Google too much - it can lead you down many wrong routes, cause further stress, and will not ultimately give you a precise answer - only your consultant can do that. I hope my story can help anyone waiting for their appointment. x
