Breast lump

Hi everyone.

I found a lump in my left breast over the weekend. Initially I thought it could have been connected to my period as I first started with quite bad pains a few days before I found it. Anyway it's been very tender and more painful if I'm wearing a bra. Saw the doctor today and she isn't overly concerned. She said her 'gut' feeling was inflammatory or a bleed and even asked if I'd been punched there. She said to try an anti inflammatory gel and see what happens over 2 weeks and to come back. She said does that sound ok? I said no not really. So she referred me but not under the urgent 2 week wait and said I could be waiting up to 6 weeks. She said because of how suddenly it came on it's unlikely to be anything 'nasty' I just wondered if anyone else has been told a lump could be this?? I'm obviously going out of my mind. I had a lump removed around 10 years ago which was a fibroadenoma. The lump feels completely different this time round which is why I'm freaking out! Since I've been to the doctors this morning I've felt like I've got a new ache and pain in every part of my body so I'm obviously I'm thinking something horrid and that it's spread. Wondering if I should see a different doctor or if I'm just being dramatic.

  • Hi Stars61

It's always a worry finding a lump. You did the right thing in asking for a referral as only a mammogram/ultrasound will find any abnormities. Saying that, however, GPs see people with lumps all the time and know when to worry and when to take a cautious approach. So I would take some comfort in the fact that the GP thought this was minor.

Our minds can go into overdrive and we worry about every ache and pain being something sinister but it's more likely that your senses are heightened and you are noticing everything you would normally not blink an eye at.

You have been put on the correct clinical pathway and IF the test results show that other specialists need to be involved then that will be arranged by the clinical team.

Try not to jump to conclusions, you are in safe hands and hopefully your mind will be put to rest soon.

  • Hi Stars61,

I found my lump like you and got to see my gp the following week. She also suggested a non 2 week pathway but the next level up, just like you. However I received a 2 week wait appointment, I know I was lucky really. I didn't have any other symptoms but unfortunately I did have IDC grade 3 breast cancer.

I'm on chemo now, finished round 3 and it's going fine, but I digress.

I know it's horrible waiting and you just want definitive results. Maybe you'll be lucky like me and get a quicker appointment.  I'm based in the South West of England so I guess it depends on your area and local resources etc..

Rest assured, if they find something,  fingers crossed it's NOT cancer, they can act really quickly. After my diagnosis on a Thursday I had an mri the following week, picc line inserted and chemo the week after. So two weeks and treatment began. My tumour is grade 3 and fast growing hence their super speedy response but it shows it can be done, if that's any consolation.

I'll cross my fingers for you for a quick appointment and clear results. Most lumps aren't cancerous and you really are in safe hands.

Good luck, I'll be thinking of you  and you'll get through these weeks waiting. There's a lovely community of people here to talk to with lots of support. Any questions, somebody is bound to know a little or have been through something simlar.

    Take care

  • Hi Rach

Thank you for your reply. I really appreciate it!

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, it's good to hear you got your treatment started so quickly.

I try and tell myself not to worry until there is something to worry about but easier said than done isn't it. I'll try the anti inflammatory gel and see how I get on like she suggested. If there is no change I'll go back and maybe the gp will change the referral to a quicker one. I'm in the north west. She did mention that the clinics were snowed under at the moment, which is understandable. Think I'm panicking a bit because although I'd had bad pain with my breast a day or 2 before finding the lump, when the gp was checking, the lump wasn't actually painful but all around it was tender. I'm going to drive myself mad keep thinking about it!

Thank you again for taking the time out to write such kind words.

I really hope your treatment goes well.

    take care!

  • Hi magpiemaggie

Thank you so much for your reply.

I'm glad I asked for a referral. I couldn't have waited any longer going off her 'gut' feeling. Like you said, only a mammogram or ultrasound will be able to confirm what it is! Hopefully I'll get an appointment sooner rather than later!

    Take care
