Positive q FIT test and Symptoms of bowel cancer

Hello All,

I am really anxious at the minute and would like to hear of other's experiences. I have had bleeding usually with a BM for about 6 weeks, I also have had change in bowel habit - very loose and going 4 or 5 times a day which is definitely not like me. The blood is red and not huge amounts. Also quite a lot of wind but no abdominal pain. Had bloods done and they were normal but my q FIT had a reading of over 400. Dr said she didn't know exact figure, just that it was above 400. I am now being sent for a colonoscopy and I am worried sick as I have googled a lot and expecting the worst. Dr says it is 10% chance of colon cancer or 50 % chance of a serious intestional condition. The dr seemed quite concerned which worried me. I was told I would be red flagged and get an appointment within 3 to 4 weeks for the colonoscopy. This will be a long wait. I am female and 53.

  • Hi Amhe

i am sorry to hear you are so worried. It is good that you are going to have tests and I hope it is all fine. 90% not cancer sounds better so turn it on it's head
I have a colonoscopy tomorrow. Just about to start my laxatives. I am terrified. I've held it together up until today but have had a cry today. I had an elevated FIT test (154), constant red blood in stools but no other symptoms. No bloating or nausea. Stay positive and let me know how you get on. I am female and I am 45 x

  • I am also going through similar and have been since 2020 with bleeding that's got significantly worse this last week. I have not had a qfit test. I have an appointment with a gastroenterologist on Monday and I'm so nervous.

I also have other symptoms like tummy and back pain, and feeling of needing to go more. I am 36 and so anxious.

    Sending big hugs x

  • Hi Tallulah

Thank you for your reply and kind words. I'm sure like me you are just shocked that you are in this situation. Up until now I always considered myself healthy and fit, I suppose it's not the knowing that is the worst and it's almost like tempting fate being positive.
I hope your colonoscopy is not too uncomfortable tomorrow and you get results that put your mind at rest. Let me know also how you get on when you feel well enough x

  • Hi Kirstynic,

I am sorry to hear you have been going through this for so long, I'm not sure why you didn't get a qfit test as that was the first thing my dr suggested. However, having your appointment with the gastroenterologist who is s-ecialist will be much better than waiting for results from tests. I hope you get some answers on Monday x

  • Hi

i had my colonoscopy today. It was uncomfortable but not too bad. I was diagnosed with severe diverticulosis and they found a 30mm flat polyp. This will be removed in 4 weeks as it is too big to move during colonoscopy. They will then send this for tests. The surgeon was very sure this was not malignant so fingers crossed. I feel so much better now I know why I was bleeding and it is fixable. The not knowing is the worst bit. Fingers crossed for you and I am sure you will be fine xx

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to send me your result. That all sounds very positive and the surgeon sounds optimistic, I don't think he would sugar coat results, they tend to tell things as they are. I am sure you feel much more content and hopefully it will all be over in a few weeks. I stupidly did some Googling yesterday and read that the higher the fit result the greater the chance of CRC. So I am really going to try hard not to look anymore as I have got myself so worked up.

How  long did you have to wait for your colonoscopy? My Dr told me 3 to 4 weeks, though I read it should be 2 weeks if it was red flagged, which I am.

I hope you are feeling well today and not too uncomfortable after your procedure.

    thank you xx
