Referred for breast clinic 2ww

Hi so I found a hard peasized lump in my breast about 4/5 weeks ago now. I managed to get a drs appointment after a lot of faf about a week and a half after finding it. The gp was great and done a very thorough check she found the lump instantly after telling me not to tell her where it was and she would try to locate it. I've had a lump before that felt more like a grape and turned out to be a cyst, I feel this lump is harder I said this to the gp and she agreed it felt hard. Anyway I got my appointment at the one stop shop breast clinic on the day exactly 2 weeks after the gp referred me. I waited for the appointment and was called through, as I went through there was a sign on the door saying that if a scan or mammogram would be needed that unfortunately this would not be able to happen that day (I've been before and they usually do it all there and then) anyway I went through to see this dr who spoke to me briefly and I told her where abouts the lump was then she sort of gently patted areas of my breast.. she didn't feel under my armpit and it felt completely different to any breast examination I've had before... the lump is to the side of my breast towards the armpit and she was pattingby the nipple and near my chest. She stated she couldn't feel a lump and I said to her well you wouldn't  as it's here and showed her where it was she felt the area for what felt like 2 seconds ( if that) and then said really quickly yes yes very small and I said well pea sized and she said yes you will need a scan but we can't do that today. The health care assistant then handed me a leaflet and said if I don't hear within 4 weeks for a scan call up and that was it. This was a week ago and I feel really annoyed, I feel the appointment was a complete waste of time and  to be honest I don't think she even felt the lump. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

    Hi Christina,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Was the doctor you saw perhaps a registrar who is only learning the ropes? Please don't worry about your examination. The fact that she has referred you for  a scan is good news, as this is the best way to rule out anyting untoward. If anything shows up on your scan, you may also have a biopsy. Unfortunately, if this happens, you will have to wait a further 1 or 2 weeks to get the result.  Waiting is always a worrying time, so I hope that your appointment comes through soon.

Cysts can fill up again, so I hope that this is all that this is. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Christina,

Its frustrating when you feel that you have not been able to show the doctor the area of concern. Having a scan is reassuring as you can speak with the team when they have the results, you haven't been left high and dry and sent back to your GP.
Try to relax and wait for the scan they are usually pretty good at getting on with breast scans.
l hope you have your appointment soon

    take care

  • Hi, Thankyou so much for your reply. The cyst I had was in a different place but hopefully it is another one I just feel like this one feels different but it was 3 years ago so I could be remembering it wrong.
I think she was a registra looking back. It's just the waiting and Also not knowing when the scan will be, I work and have 2 small children so it's the logistics of getting to the appointment (I haven't wanted to tell work so took a days holiday for the last appointment)

I might give them a call next week to see if there is a date available.

    thank you again

  • Hi; Thankyou so much for replying. Yes your right at least I no that at the scan I can say to them exactly where it is and hopefully get some peace of mind. It's so hard at the moment as the the drs and hospitals are so under staffed and over worker bless them and I no they are all trying their best xx

    Hi Christina,

It is always difficult to fit appointments in when you work. Are you in the position to take a cancellation? The clinics are getting a few cancellations due to the incidence of Covid, so you might manage to get seen sooner, if you tell them that you are willing to take one if it turns up.

It sounds as if the doctor you saw was fairly early in her career - I suppose that all doctors have got to learn - just preferably not on us!

I hope that you hear soon. Please let us know when you do.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi,

I'm feeling really deflated today. It's been just over 3 weeks since I had my appointment where they said i need a scan, I rang up today to see if there was a date and they said no still no date and they are really backed up apparently and she said it's more like 6 weeks to wait for a scan.

I'm so frustrated, I was referred to the two week wait one stop shop where they should of done a scan and if necessary a biopsy. Feels like such a long time to wait :(

    sorry for the moan

    Hi Christina,

Some clinics are really struggling to catch up on the backlog following Covid. It sounds as if this is the case in your area. Don't let this get you down. It is disappointing to have to wait so much longer than expected, but it shouldn't impact on the outcome of your treatment.

    Kind regards,
