Anxious waiting on biopsy results

Hi All,

I am a 24 year old female anxiously waiting on test results over three weeks now with no further update from the hospital.

To give you some context my symptoms started several months ago (heavy bleeding, diarrhoea, lower abdominal/back pain, rectal pain, fatigue etc etc). I went to my doctor and she referred me for a urgent colonoscopy. In the mean time I had two a&e visits, blood tests were taken (all good) and a CT Scan (again all good). I went home with IBS tablets and hemriod cream.

Over four weeks ago I eventually went for the colonoscopy where polyps (adenomas) apperently a mix between two types (not sure what they were call) was found. These were from what I can remember, about 1cm, 2cm and 2.5cm. Biposys were taken and I was told I would get results in around two weeks. I was also told I would need another scope of stomach etc. I asked if they thought they were cancerious and was told 'I don't want to alam you and say they are not, I also don't want to give you false promises and tell you that they are not.

Long story short, I have rang the hospital multiple times and my test results are not back and they don't seem to know if I have been scheduled to have the other scope. I feel like I am in limbo. I'm still not feeling great, the bleeding isn't as bad but I'm definitely not feeling 100%.

I'm not sure if over 3 week to 4 weeks is a normal waiting time. I'm also not really sure if I'm going to have this other scope. Has anyone else waited this long and (I know your not medically trained) but do you think this might be cancer?

Anyway rant over.

Thanks in advance for any advice or answers.

  • Hello Tashi_ and a big welcome to Cancer Chat,

I can understand why you are feeling anxious. Three weeks is a long time to have to wait for results and according to the colonoscopy page on our website, biopsy results normally take up to two weeks but perhaps there have been delays so keep chasing these important results. I hope that you will get some answers soon. It must be really stressful for you. Unfortunately no one here will be able to tell you what this is and only the test results will give you a proper diagnosis but I hope that you will hear from the experiences of other members of our community who have been through this before, waited this long for results and/or had similar symptoms.

The hardest thing really is this long wait and the feeling you described of being left in limbo. This is something many of our members will be able to relate to. Try to take one day at a time as you are waiting to find out more and stay well away from the temptation of Dr Google as this will only make you feel more anxious. It won't be long now hopefully until you get some clarity on all this. There are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out to be fine,

    Best wishes,

  • I would ring the colorectal secretary and ask for her to contact the consultant for you to discover where your results have got to. Following my colonoscopy l heard from the colorectal nurse a couple of weeks after they referred me to gynaecology oncology, l had complex ovarian cysts.
