Bruising and redness 1 year after mastectomy

Morning,

I had a bilateral mastectomy in November 2021 aftee chemo and rads, and have healed well. Last week I noticed the side I had the cancer on had become red and purplish. After a couple of days it looked like bruising and started going yellow too. This has covered my whole mastectomy site now with more bruising and redness appearing yesterday. I'm waiting for a call back from the breast care nurses but I wondered in the mean time, has anyone had any bruising or redness that's that's caused by activity or fitness? I'm not too worried it's a recurrance although that's always in the back of my mind with that being the side I had the cancer in.

Any ideas or experiences?

Thanks,

May x

  • I would get my doctor to take a look we can't help but worry when things change. Maybe a trip back to the breast clinic would be a help they usually give an open appointment l ring when I want to see them. The breast nurses may be able to get you an appointment they soon referred my recent medication problems back to the consultant who rang me 20 mins later.
I hope all is fine take care

  • Hi Susie,

Thank you for your reply. I had a call back from the breast care team today who spoke with my oncologist and theyve decided to watch and wait and see what happens with it. I had a new area of bruising come up yesterday, but hoping that's it now. If it gets much worse I'll phone back. Still stumped as to what it may be, the breast care nurse said maybe because of radiotherapy but that was a year ago!? Anyway, I'll just keep an eye on it.

    Hi May,

I had a lumpectomy nearly 13 years ago, followed by a bilateral mastectomy the following year for a new cancer. Since then I have had the occasional bruise from the usual knocks that we encounter in our day to day lives. These have gone through the same colour changes you describe, which would be normal for any bruising. The only difference is that none of these covered the whole mastectomy site. Have you been doing any activity that might cause this? It doesn't sound like a cancer reccurrence _ I felt another definite lump second time around.

I hop that the breast care nurses phone you back soon and can give you the reassurance that you need.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks for your reply Jolamine,

I haven't done anything different the last few weeks that I haven't done tye last few months, maybe it is just how my skin will go from time to time now, but I'll keep an eye on it and let you know  what it could be.

    Thank you,

  • Hi May,

I doubt that this will be anything untoward, but please let us know.
