Blood in Poo

Hi Everyone,

I recently did a FIT test due to blood in my poo and a week later received a letter telling me that there has been an appointment arranged for me with a consultant surgeon, no explaination or indication of the results of the test just a consultation appointment.  Has anyone else had this?

  • I haven't had that exactly, but I guess it would be an appointment to give you the results of the test?

There is no way they can know anything other than whether or not you have blood in your poo and how much from that test. If you saw blood in your poo, then you pretty much know the result anyway. It is very likely to be positive.

Lots of things can cause blood in your poo and it seems likely they will do a colonoscopy to find out what is causing it in your case. I'd guess the consultant surgeon will be the person to do that? The most likely result is something like hemorrhoids, but there are loads of possibilities - hemorrhoids, possibly a fissure, polyps, Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis (which I've probably mispelled), cancer, certain infections...

Age makes a different. If you are under 60, cancer and I think diverticulitis and polyps are probably fairly unlikely. If you are older, well, cancer at least is still on the less likely side, but there is more of a chance and possibly somewhat less of a chance of Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. At any age, the more minor things are the more likely.

I had rectal bleeding, some weight loss, some loose stools (maybe once or twice a week) and trapped wind over the summer. The consultant surgeon told me that as I was only 40, I would be "the unluckiest person in the world" if it turned out to be cancer and that it was probably hemorrhoids, which turned out to be the case.

  • I got to a consultant in a slightly different way but I recall being terrified at what was in store. Especially with the 'consultant surgeon'  That initial meeting was a chat. A finger up the bum and then scheduled for a colonoscopy. Cheering  you on, hope it all turns out OK x

  • Thanks so much for your message, I've had the finger up the bum at my GP surgery, she referred me for the FIT test which lead to the letter. I didn't see blood in the sample I sent but I am assuming they found some. I found sending the letter without details of the test results and indication of what the meeting was about quite blunt knowing I would be concerned.

    how are you now? Xx

  • Thought I replied to this but it doesn't seem to have shown up. Apologies if you get 2 similar messages off me!

Yep I had a finger from the gp and then one from the consultant. Try not to sweat the letter too much.  The consultant will read your notes when you arrive. The letter you received is just a formality. The place your in now I know well and what I went with was there is nothing I can change now. Just get answers and it may be many things but you obviously need to get cancer ruled out!

I have been doing great but need to contact the team as I've noticed blood last night and some changes to my general health again recently. My yearly colonoscopy is behind schedule and I am struggling to vocalise the fears. I don't want to say it outloud! so I am on here just getting my head together to deal with a potential reoccurance. Meh! X keep us posted on what happens and I hope it all ends up being OK xxx

  • Aw, thanks for  your reply, it really means a lot. I hope you  feel better soon and any fears you have are quickly dealt with and it puts your mind to rest and you stay healthy . I will try to be patient until my appointment and come back at let u know. Thanks for helping me, despite the great family I have you can feel abit lonely in you own head. X

  • Your welcome and thanks. It's totally a lonely place in your head qnd it can be really frustrating dealing with others who aren't in this situation. Use this space as you need. If it should be cancer, mine was delt with in 6 short weeks, from diagnosis to being given the all clear. So it can be delt with quickly. Defo keep me updated and if you need someone to vent too feel free. I'm happy to listen x

  • Your a gem, you are so right, that's why I appreciate speaking to someone who has felt how I am feeling just now. thanks so much, take care xx
