Terrified of cervical cancer

Hi. I've posted here before and find it a good support. Hence why I'm posting again. I'm terrified I have cervical cancer. For years I have experience pink spotting after intercourse on and off. It seems to be happening more often now and sometimes I also have intermenstrual spotting.
i was seen in colposcopy one Jan for this and my smear showed low risk HPV and cytology was negative so I'm on the 5 year recall. I also had a biopsy done and that was fine. I know that should be reassuring enough and that I may have an ectopy (have had that before) but I just can't shake the thought that something may have been missed or like I may have cervical cancer in the cervical canal and that's why my smears have been fine. Am I being silly? I have a child who's nearly 3 and my fear is not seeing her grow up. I just don't know why this happens! I find the spotting after sex isn't all the time, mainly happens when I'm ovulating (trying to conceive at the moment) or before my period is due. Driving myself crazy thinking about.
Also, 6 years ago I had CIN 3 and the LLTEZ treatment it and smears have been ok since. What incase there is some in the cervical canal left and it's developed into cervical cancer? Could that happen?

  • Living with the unknown or the thought that something has been missed can be very challenging so if you feel this is going to play on your mind, do be sure to book an appointment with your GP or nurse so you can work through these worries and fears together.

Our team of cancer nurses are also very knowledgeable in this field so if you'd like to discuss this in more detail with them, you can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very supportive and will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease.

I'm really pleased you've found the forum and our community a great help in the past Sweetpea, and hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will be along soon to provide you with more support and advice.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate it.

I've managed to get a gynaecology appointment for Tuesday so I'm quite happy with that. Just trying not to let my mind race. Easier said than done however.
I'll call the cancer nurses however if I find myself struggling between now and then. Thank you so much again.

  • That's great news Sweetpea but I know the next 4 days are still going to be tough so if you find yourself needing to unload or let off steam then rest assured, the forum will be open.

I forgot to say our cancer nurses won't be available over the bank holiday weekend so if you would like to speak with them, it may be best to do it today or if you have time before your appointment, Tuesday morning.

In the meantime, I hope these tips on managing anxiety will help keep your thoughts at bay until next week.

    Kind regards,
