Bladder cancer in thr elderly

Hi, I'm new to this forum and hope I can post this here.

My wonderful Dad is almost 92. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer (Cis) in 2012. He has had regular 6 month check ups since then. He has had a number of TURBT procedures and has had several BCG treatments, the most recent of which was in Dec 2021.

This week, following TURBT in  March. he received a letter asking him to attend an appointment with the consultant next week. In all the time my Dad has been attending hospital he has never been to see a consultant.   The nursing team have dealt with the BCG treatment. After the TURBT procedures he has just had letters advising whether the tumours removed were cancerous and the stages.

To be asked to go and see the consultant has really made me anxious. Bladder removal at 92 I think would not be wise.

My Dad is independent. He is active enjoying walking and gardening. 2 years ago he participated in a paragliding event and aged  89 he did a parachute jump.!    I can't bear to think of him undergoing a bladder removal or chemo.

I'm sorry, I'm rambling on, but wonder what experiences anyone might have or any words of advice.

Thank you do much.

  • Hi DiHod,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. Of course it's absolutely fine to post this - it's exactly what the forum is here for and I hope it can provide some support to you.

Your Dad sounds very impressive. I can completely understand your concerns - and I know any uncertainty can be tough to deal with.

It's difficult to advise on what to potentially expect, but I hope that it's not too long to wait for the appointment. If you are attending the appointment with him then try to make the most of this by asking any and all questions that you have, and perhaps making some notes too.

Whatever happens we're always here for support if you need it.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi Ben

Thank you for your kind response.  We have seen the consultant today.   The  result of the last TURBT shows CIS and no changes from previous biopsies.  The hospital are disappointed BCG didn't work and think its because Dad struggles to hold in the solution for the required time.   He is starting a 6 week course of intravenous chemo. The consultant is hopeful this will work in ridding Dad if the tumours. Fingers crossed.

I appreciate your support, thank you so much.
