I don't know exactly what that means, but, I had thyroid cancer and I think the majority of people with nodules are referred for biopsy. I think it's rare enough that the ultrasound is conclusive one way or the other. The information might give them an indication of how likely it is to be thyroid cancer, but you are probably better off not knowing too much about that, because some of those that have a 5% chance of being cancer will turn out to be cancerous and some of those with a 70%-90% chance will turn out not to be. You won't really know until you get the biopsy results.

My understanding is there are a small number of cases where the ultrasound shows it to be so unlikely it's cancer that they don't biopsy, but that those are a minority and most are unclear at that point.

And if it is thyroid cancer (and the majority of nodules are benign), well, in the words of my surgeon, "it's not the worst situation in the world." It really isn't what you are probably imagining when you hear the word "cancer." Most forms are very rarely life-threatening, they do not use chemotherapy or radiotherapy except in very rare situations. For the most part, it just means having your thyroid removed.
