2ww Head&Neck referral for patch on tongue. What will happen

Hi Everyone,

I feel kind of silly posting here as I'm not diagnosed. I did think that some of you may know best about what I wish to ask though.
I was referred 2ww Head and Neck yesterday after going to the doctors about a relatively painless ulcer/white patch on my tongue I've had for about 6 weeks. I understand the chance of diagnosis after 2ww is actually slim and I'm trying to not be too worried. I am an anxious person in general though so this is hard for me.
My appointment is next Thursday. I did not ask what the appointment involves. Has anyone had a 2ww appointment for similar reasons and if so, what happened at the appointment?
thank you!
Holly

I hope this helps and all goes well on Thursday.

  • Hi Holly,

I was referred to maxillofacial mid March, she looked in my mouth, I had a full oral xray, she told me nothing to report there besides my wisdom teeth are still in my gums at 35 :silly:

she referred me for an "urgent" mri which is Thursday 14th, after ive had that i need to ring her secretary and they will look out for the results and book me in for a scope with ENT. Hopefully it is nothing to worry about but its always best to get checked out.

I completely understand anxiety I suffer with health anxiety myself just try to stay as calm as possible I always get told there is no answer :silly: to my symptoms  so not expecting anything from my case really, even though I'm scared of the diagnosis of cancer or long covid. Hopefully your consultant will do some tests to put your mind at rest xx

    take care

  • Hi Chloe,

Thank you for replying. I really hope you get the all clear even though I do understand the worry of having symptoms and no answers. Hopefully you get somewhere! What symptoms do you have?

I struggle to not jump to worst case thoughts, especially since I've been diagnosed with Crohn's disease and inflammatory arthritis in the last two years, doesn't bad news come in threes? (I'm half joking)

im nervous for Thursday as I don't know what to expect. Did they do the X-ray at your first appointment?

    thank you!

  • It's okay I apologise in advance it's a long one :silly:

I was referred on 2ww last February due to just feeling unwell and having a raised lymph node behind my right ear, no diagnosis besides low vitamin D. My current symptoms are maybe related to having covid in November 21, laryngitis tonsillitis and pharyngitis didn't feel better till around Christmas time obviously took a photo at the time due to a telephone conversation with my GP. Fast forward to early March this year it was the weekend and I had what I thought was my bells palsy symptoms coming back. As I was talking to 111 I ran my tongue at roof of my mouth and felt a long swelling, Since then I have more raised lymph nodes mainly down the right and back right of my neck which is causing creases and stiffness and I think nodes/swelling in my shoulder. My throat doesn't hurt I just feel like I'm choking on my tongue when I yawn and trying to swallow hard foods has been challenging maybe to do with the redness at the back of my throat, which has been there since covid along with an extra lump above my right tonsil and a few ulcers on soft palate.

I had the xray at the appointment she did say she would of done a scope too but no ENT in that day  I'm sorry to hear you have chrons and rheumatoid arthritis. I have an unexplained functinal neurological disorder lots of diagnosis and changing it too  I only sweat down left side of my face so basically my right side is not working properly including all the new symptoms

hopefully you will feel better after Thursday I'm sure you will get the right tests you need to be fair the consultant I saw did listen to me and my husband it's just taking forever :cry::cry:

  • Hi Chloe,

I apologise I've only just seen your message! Thank you for coming back to me and I hope you are doing well?

I've now had my 2ww appointment which went well, the dr did not know what the red/white patches are on my tongue but he was very hopeful it isn't sinister which was lovely to hear. He organised a biopsy for me which I had done yesterday. The actual procedure was pretty pain free, just the initial injection shock, but the after has been pretty miserable so far. It's hard to eat and quite painful but it should go away quickly! A couple of weeks for results but I've been told it's unlikely to be sinister so I'm a bit more relaxed than I was.

let me know how you're getting on.
