Biopsy results

Hello,

I had an unusual growth on my gums, which I noticed last year. I went to see a specialist, had a biopsy taken in July and when the results came back, it was (mild) dysplasia. I was living in another country, so couldn't go for a follow-up. For the past few months it felt like the "lesion" was growing back, so I called my GP, explained my situation, sent some pics in, and they referred me to a specialist. After the consultation, the specialist sent me for another biopsy. After a 2 weeks wait, I called the hospital to ask them about the results, but it went to an automatic voicemail, and no one called me back ever since. Today I received a letter, but there's no results, the letter was only informing me about an appointment I'll have in June (2 months from now). Is that good news?

    Sorrynel,

You have done the right thing by getting these symptoms checked out again. You are unlikely to get the results until you see the specialist. Two months does seem rather a long wait for biopsy results. Hopefully this means good news, but it is impossible to be sure until you are told for certain.

You might have a chance of getting an earlier appointment if you offer to take a last minute cancellation. Many clinics are experiencing a large number of cancellations due to Covid, so you might just be lucky enough to get one of these.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

    Thank you for your response!

I've got in touch with my GP to request access to the biopsy result, but they said they don't have a copy of it on my GP records (which is odd, as I can see the "mouth symptoms" were removed from my conditions - these were added after the initial appointment with the GP), and advised me to speak with the Head and Neck Consultant from the hospital, so I guess there's not much I can do until my appointment in June.

    Best wishes,

    Sorrynel x

    Hi Sorrynel,

Your hospital consultant will get the result before your GP and may not even contact your GP until after he has spoken to you in June.. As I said in my last post, your best chance of an earlier appointment ,is to offer to take a last minute cancellation before your consultation in June.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Sorrynel,

I feel for you! Waiting for results is awful. I just had my procedure on Friday and I am chomping at the bit already! I don't have a follow up either.

  • Hi Songbird68,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Hope it will get easier for you to cope with this. I might be wrong, but I think it would make our lives so much easier to have a 2 minute conversation over the phone with the consultants, rather  than waiting 2 months for results.

    Best wishes,

    Sorrynel

  • Hi Sorrynel,

Sometimes results take forever as they decide to have an MDT before they speak to you - have had this happen to me twice now. I know what you mean with the give me a 2 minute conversation - I wish I had been brave enough to ask questions after my lump was removed last Friday - the silence from the surgeon was quite marked after he exposed my lump. Pre-op he kept saying how small and insignificant this lump was - and how it couldn't possibly cause me pain - then during and after removal - zip. Nothing. I just heard him asking for pots to be labelled for histology and cytology. I do wonder if I had have been asleep during the removal if I would have known that much. (I wish I had been asleep - it made my cry, so sore!) . At least I know it's out of me. I just need to know WHAT it is! Knowledge is not half as scary as ignorance!

Let me know how things go for you. I was told yesterday after I called the hospital, that results would be about 3 weeks to come in.
