Colposcopy

Hi All,

Firstly a bit of context and background information. In December 2021 I noticed heavy bleeding during and after sex. This bleeding would last for several days/weeks after. Sex was generally painful but nothing too concerning. I was feeling generally tired and experiencing pain in my legs and pelvic area.

I called my GP and was examined very quickly, she suspected an ectropion but submitted an urgent referral to see the gynaecologist at the hospital. The gynaecologist confirmed what she saw was an ectropion, but would also refer me for a further ultrasound (both internal and external) as I was experiencing abdominal pain.

The ultrasound showed a small complex ovarian cyst, and as they couldn't confirm the nature of a small area they requested an urgent CA125 blood test. This came back normal. They would like me to go for a follow up ultrasound and CA125 blood test every other month now to monitor the size and any changes.

Today (01/04/22) I attended my colposcopy appointment (quite uncomfortable but not the end of the world). She noticed I was bleeding quite heavily and noticed some areas around my cervix which looked quite concerning. She took a biopsy and advised that this would confirm if the area or concern is precancerous or cancerous.

I feel like since December I have been on this emotional rollercoaster, suspected cancer to confirmed not cancer to again suspected cancer. Should I be worried? Or is this all a precautionary measure?

I am only 22, cancer has affected my family (including kidney and breast cancer). I am very grateful for the support I have received so far from the hospital and GP, I would just like some reassurance from other women going through the same thing.

Thank you.

Megan.

  • A warm welcome to the Cancer Chat community Megan although I'm really sorry for the worry and stress this is causing.

Many of our members have been in similar situations and will definitely understand the emotional rollercoaster you've been on so hopefully some of them will be along soon to offer you their support and advice.

I know this will be an anxious time until your biopsy results have come back but I hope this article I've found on how to cope with waiting for news will help keep your nerves at bay until you know more.

Fingers crossed everything will be o.k Megan.

    All the best,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
