Vacuum biopsy results tomorrow...

...and I'm scared. I guess it's hard not to be. My mum had breast cancer, so it feels like a painful reminder.

Anyone been through similar?

  • Hello Kazlizzie and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

By now you will probably have had the vaccum biopsy results and I hope everything is ok? I just wanted you to know that we are all here for you and hopefully you will hear from other members of our forum soon who have been through this before.

Keep us updated if you get a chance on what you found out yesterday. I hope that everything went well for you and that you feel less nervous now.

    Best wishes,

    Hi Kaz;izzie,

A very warm wecome to our forum. i am sorry that I didn't reply before you got your biopsy results. I have only just come across your post. I hope that all went well for you

My mum died from secondary breast cancer and I myself have had 2 bouts in the past 12 years. I am sorry that this has been a painful reminder for you too and hope that you didn't let your imagination run away with you whilst you were waiting.

Most of us find that, irrespective of the outcome, it is easier to know wha is wrong, than not to know.

Please feel free to share your results with us and remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you both for responding. I have breast cancer - DCIS - and have been recommended to have a mastectomy as there is a 6cm area that would need to be cut out, and I only have small breasts. I actually feel ok as my prognosis is good. I feel like one of the lucky ones. My mum also died Jolamine, so I was expecting bad news. One good thing to come out of it is my daughter and my sisters will now be monitored much more closely x

    Hi Kazlizzie,

Although none of us want a cancer diagnosis, DCIS is about as good as it gets, as this is often considered as pre-cancerous. Here's hoping that treatment will stop it from developing. It is a pity that you have to have a mastectomy. I had a lumpectomy, followed by a double mastectomy the following year. I had less bother with the mastectomies that I had with the lumpectomy and felt much happier that I had removed all of the cancer that I could. Unfortunately, I wasn't a suitable candidate for reconstruction, but have managed well with a selecton of prostheses for different activities.

I am sorry to hear that you lost your mum too. One good thing is that this will give the rest of the family the opportunity to get checked out regularly.

Have you got a date for your mastectomy yet and are you planning reconstruction at the same time?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. As I said before, we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you so much Jolamine

I don't have a date yet - I am talking to my surgeon on Thursday and in the meantime, need to have a read of all the leaflets given to me so I can decide about reconstruction. Also, I was obviously feeling overwhelmed when I met my surgeon the other day, so didn't take in everything she said.

There is a lot of upset and some fear amongst my daughter, my sisters and their daughters, but we will all ask about referral to family history clinics tomorrow.

Hope all is good with you at this point in time.

    Hi Karen,

It is only natural that you felt overwhelmed the other day, but we all forget most of what is said in these consultations before we leave the hospital grounds. My appointments were all pre-Covid, when I could take my hubby with me. We went armed with a list of questions each time and hubby would write down the answers after I asked a question.

I can understand the upset that this has caused to your family.  As it is, one in two people get cancer these days, so their chances are not increased by that much. Close monitoring should catch anything untoward at the early stages, which is so important. You have a lot of reading to do before Friday and I hope that these leaflets help you to reach the right decision for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
