Neck biopsy

Hi looking for some advice I found a swollen lymph node on my neck a few months back I have been to several appointments most recent being Monday for a ultrasound and biopsy it all seems a blur. I asked when they where doing the ultrasound could they see anything ( seemed he was on my left side for a long time ) then carried out a biopsy on my thyroid and swollen lymph nodes he then asked me did I want him to be honest and he suspected it to be thyroid cancer and how not to Google and biopsy would be sent away in still in shock and I was not expecting to be told that before biopsy being anazilsied can they see from scans etc I wasn't prepared for it but I am glad he was honest also , I'm now thinking did I hear him right etc called today to check how long results would be to be told they are back from the secretary and ent consultant is on call all week she will highlight to him it's back , I have been a anxious mess waiting

  • I am going through exactly same thing at the moment.I was referered by my dentist for a lump under my ear.On my first hospital consultation with maxiofacial I was immediately sent for a ultrasound.I did that and they found two lumps.I was told the one I was sent in for was more like calcified tendon but the other needed more tests.A week later I had ct and then another ultrasound with biopsy.I have been told its on my thyroid and he has seen alot of benign lumps in his time and mine isn't that. Then said to prepare myself for the worst and started talking about operations and treatments to me I was due to go back for my results but unfortunately I can't atm as we have a overseas holiday we have planned for over two years. The wait for results is going to kill me but trying to stay positive.

  • Im so sorry your also going through this it's the waiting that's the worse that was a week today I had biopsy but he told me more or less he's pretty certain at the scan it's thyroid cancer have spoken to some users on here who have put me at ease that it can be removed and replacement hormone tablets so please try not worry ( should take my own advice lol ) did they also tell you this at a scan ? I didn't think was possible for them to tell us this until biopsy was back. The worst bit is mines is back Thursday and I still haven't been contacted I was sick with anxiety today looking at my phone all day so decided to call the secretary today all day it went to voicemail so I'm guessing she's off today really hoped I would of heard today too but I'm going to get back on the phone tommorow again hope you have a lovely trip and manage to switch off keep me updated with everything

  • Thank you chatting to you about your experience has really helped me this week I was prepared more for that today I was more suprised that ENT said don't specialise in thyroid cancer I don't know if mabye just the one consultant so I'm now wondering where I am going to now and didn't even ask about the lymph nodes where the lump is I'm wondering if that means it's there too he said was more than one at the scan but nothing was mentioned to me on the call just I had thyroid cancer they don't specialise in it and someone from a team what does will be in touch I'm not sure how soon the wait is I have never actually seen anyone face to face since this began except at the ultrasound at a diff hospital but chatting on here is really keeping me postive x

  • Thank you so much I will feel better once I see someone face to face cause I'm left wondering is it my whole thyroid etc what about these swollen lymph nodes does that mean it's there got so many questions now hopefully I won't be waiting long x

  • Bless you stay in touch hun,let me know how you get on.Im going away next week but still have Internet etc.x

  • I will do thank you have the best time and try to relax and not worry x

  • Thanks hun.I don't know if it helps at all but a maxiofacial team have been dealing with all mine.I imagine if you need surgery maybe still ent or thyroid clinic.I wishing you all the best will be thinking of you.

  • They often can't tell if it's in the lymph nodes or not until they do the operation. A thyroid biopsy won't say anything about that. I got called for a lymph node biopsy, completely out of the blue - I was not told this was necessary at all and ended up calling the doctor to find out what it was they were biopsying. That came up negative - no cancer - but they took out about 57 lymph nodes anyway and found cancer in 8 of them.

I was praying not to get the results of that biopsy, as I'd been told it wouldn't be conclusive and was worried either about them saying it looked suspicious and then being more nervous about the operation when it might turn out to be nothing or them finding nothing, as happened, but the doctory deciding it looked suspicious during the procedure.

It doesn't matter all that much anyway. As far as I can tell, spread to the lymph nodes increases the chance of reccurance, but makes no particular different to the survival or cure rate. And like the odds are still against reccurance even if it has spread to the lymph nodes. It just means they might do radioiodine treatment and the recovery time from the operation will be longer. Like I said, I was four weeks off work, whereas it would have been less if it was only my thyroid removed.

I am surprised too that they don't do thyroid cancer. I guess it depends on specialisation and all.

  • I think they did a biopsy on the lymph nodes he went in where the lump is at side of neck then went in to the front to my thyroid I stupidly didn't even think to ask today I felt more like the call was more them telling me and telling me would pass to someone who specialises mabye I should of asked these things I was choked up I couldn't really speak. I will need to think straight and ask these questions whoever I will be dealing with next . Yeah I was confused when she said he didn't specialise in this considering I started at ENT. Thanks for the reassurance again it's good to Speak to someone who knows exactly what to expect do you mind me asking when you got diasnosed how long will surgery etc x

  • Thanks so much I will get my head together for the next bit of contact from them and ask the questions I have as I just seem to freeze x

  • I need to preface this by saying I'm in Ireland and our healthcare system is very different from ye'res. I was diagnosed in November 2019, when I was 39. I had my operation on the 6th of January, was in hospital for a week (if it had just been the thyroid removed, it would have been more like two days) and went back to work around the 6th of February.

I'd say make a written list of questions you want to ask your medical team. It's very easy to forget stuff.

    And ask whatever you want.

  • Hello how are you keeping ? That's me been called again today from ENT in a Glasgow they have a female consultant for me and have booked me in for 9.30 tommorow told me to bring someone with me so it's been quicker than I thought so hoping to get my questions answered and what the plan forward is really impressed which how quick that was x
