oh dear, what can the matter be

I am a 75 year old female who is often mistaken for a 60 year old, and is very active. My problem started in my middle 40s. I started having annoying rather than cramping tummy aches. At first I thought my period was coming back, they did not. This pain would last for 3-4 days and come back once a year or every 2 -3 years. I finally went to the Doctor about these pains and had scans that showed nothing wrong. For the past few years, the pain came more often and lasted longer. The pain came again 4 weeks ago and got worse. I started passing odd looking stools and light brown mucus and one day it was even green, but no blood - it is now soft with some lumps in it a couple of times a day - Naturally I had to inform the Doctor. She prescribed Laxado, and said I might have IBS and needed a good clear out. She also ordered a FIT test  that came back abnormal. The Concultant called and chatted with me and told me the results were not overly high, 20 -  whatever that means, too shock to ask for further details - and gave me the choice whether I wanted to have the Colonoscopy, natually I said yes and am having this done tomorrow morning. I am of course thinking the worse and hoping for the best. Ayone else have had an experience like this? Thanks for reading.

  • Hi there foreverhoping! Lovely username by the way!

I just wanted to pop in and say that 20 is definitely very low actually, the trigger point is 10 for your knowledge, most people either pass it by a LARGE margin, we're talking 300-1500, sometimes even higher! So 20 is definitely on the low side, but still a positive test, I'd try not worry too much, as if your pains were caused by some kind of bowel cancer, since your mid 40's it would be an incredibly advanced cancer by now, which would've set of the FIT test at very very high values, in the 1000's! I'd take it as a good sign, the higher blood amount may be due to something as simple as aging!

  • You were right, aging will do it everytime. I have had my Colonoscopy and have been diagnosed with Divertcular Disease, lack of fibre and age. They still want to do a CT Scan though.

  • I'm really glad it was nothing too bad! Hopefully you can find some way to deal with your Diverticular disease, that would be ideal! Best of luck, and all the best of wishes!

  • Hi, Ihad my CT scan yesterday and it is not good. They found a thickening of the wall in the decending colon. I have to have an operation to remove this part, rejoin to the 2 ends and have a biopsy on the thickened part. They are already treating it like Cancer. I have been given a booklet and other literature on Bowel Cancer.

  • Hi, I've had the results of my CT scan yesterday and it is not good. They have found a thickening of the wall in the decending Colon. I have to have an operation to remove this part, rejoin the two ends and send that part off for biopsy. But, they are already treating it like cancer as I have been given a booklet and other information on all kinds of help.
