Persistant sore throat for 3 months

Hello, please can anyone help who has suffered similar symptoms?

Long story short, I had an initial throat infection January 2022, which I was treated for and swabs I have had done since show that it has gone so doctors are ruling that out now.  I've had the worst sore throat since this began, feeling like something prickly is constantly stuck in my throat.  My neck and underarm glands are swollen.  My neck feels really tight as though I'm being strangled and this too is constant.  Also the taste buds on the back of my tongue are considerably swollen and appear different to how they used to.  I have had throat swabs done, blood tests, and a camera up my nose to look at the back of my throat but nothing has revealed a cause.  I've had anti bionics, anti fungals, anti virals and now am taking lansoprazole although this too is making no difference at all.  I have been unable to work for 2 months due to how unwell this is making me feel and seem to be getting nowhere with my gp.  I also had a private consultation which felt like a waste of time.  Has anybody had a similar experience and what did it turn out to be?  X

  • Hello Yaz20,

This sounds rather unpleasant and 3 months is a long time to have to suffer this persistent sore throat. I hope that you manage to get somewhere. It's a shame that despite all these tests, no cause has been found yet and that it has prevented you from working for two months. I can understand why you feel you've had enough of having to put up with these symptoms and would like a resolution. It must be a bit disheartening too to have had this private consultation and still be without answers.

I hope that you will hear from other members of the forum who have had a similar experience and that they will be along shortly to share their story with you. Perhaps you could try and talk to another GP? I know you've seen someone else privately but third time lucky hopefully? You can find out more about getting a second opinion on this page

Keeping everything crossed for you that you get some clarity on what is causing this very soon.

    Best wishes,
