Really concerned

Hi all,

New to this chat so I'm a bit nervous and my anxiety is through the roof at the minute.

I have had a small bowel change in the last few months, a bit of weight loss, about a stone in a year, though I have been trying to eat a bit better, and tonight I noticed what I think might be blood on toilet paper after wiping, I'm really worried booked an appointment with my gp but can't get her for another week, my anxiety is through the roof, I suppose I'm just looking a bit of reassurance and if anyone had any of the same symptoms and they turned out OK.

Please, someone reply x

Thanks

Lou

P.s. I'm 42 years old

  • I had very similar symptoms last summer - lost about a stone in a year, had repeated blood on the toilet paper for weeks on end, bad trapped wind for a couple of weeks and occasional loose stools (maybe once a week). It turned out to be hemorrhoids, probably combined with the stress of the whole thing and a few coincidences.

The consultant said that at my age - I was 40 at the time - cancer was the least likely of the possible options and I'd be "the most unlucky person in the world if it turned out to be that." He didn't even acknowledge the weight loss, said if it was significant it would be visible to people around me.

You did the right thing by booking an appointment but the odds are there is nothing serious wrong with you. At our age, bowel cancer is pretty uncommon.

  • Thank you so much for replying, that does make me feel a bit better, I've been reading younger people stories on the bcuk website and I've been absolutely climbing the walls. Hopefully I'll get a bit of sleep tonight, I hope it comes back as positive as yours x

  • Hi    Lou Lou     l had bowel investigations a year ago including a colonoscopy, that showed ovarian cysts l had no idea that they were there, l had them removed in October along with extensive adhesions it took 4 1/2 hours to remove. I was lucky to have an gynaecology oncology surgeon who took her time removing the adhesions  Fortunately not cancerous but l could feel a lump on the left side of my abdomen and had bowel changes and pain for a while. I have lost weight, It's taking a while to get back to normal, but Im relieved it's over.
l hope your results have a similar outcome and prove to be non cancerous when investigated. The blood on toilet paper can be a sign of piles. They can come and go  but your dr should be able to help you.
    take care

  • Thank you for your reply, that's alot u had to go through, I'm sure your your head was all over the place, but I'm glad everything turned out OK.

Got to see my doctor yesterday as she had a cancellation and she examined me and yes, I do have piles, she says the weight loss could be due to changing my eating better as could the change in bowel habits but she took a stool sample anyway and took my bloods but doesn't think I've anything to worry about so just have to wait for the results of those to see weather to take further action or not, but I do feel much better now x

  • I am pleased that they think it's piles what a relief for you. That's great. Good that your bloods ect are being checked. You should have the results in a week.

l was sent a breast appointment on Monday for 28th March, yesterday it was cancelled! I don't know what is going on. The post has just Brought a new appointment for 9th may. I don't know what is going on.
Have a nice relaxing weekend and enjoy the weather.

  • O no, the waiting is the worst bit, I had a cancer scare 3 years ago with lumps in my neck, all the waiting for tests and results took 3 months, I was climbing the walls, think it's left me with health anxiety. I really hope u get that appointment soon and don't have to wait too long, please let me know how u get on xx

  • Delighted to hear it's all looking good.
