Should I be worried about 2 swollen lymph nodes?

Hi,

I'm just wanting some honest advice please.

I went to my Doctor recently as I'd found a pea sized lump in my neck. It wasn't painful just hard and noticeable when I ran my fingers over it. The doctor straight away said "it's tiny and nothing to worry about" and sent me on my way.

A few days later I noticed a similar type of lump I'm the top of my arm. Not in the armpit, but at the back of my bicep. From Googling, it looks like the epicochlear lymph node (or something like that!).

My doctor has this time sent an urgent referral to the breast clinic to get this looked at and I'm worried sick. The doctor is still saying she doesn't think it's anything to worry about and that 9 out of 10 times lumps are nothing serious but I'm going out of my mind. I've convinced myself that it is serious. I can't sleep or eat and am making myself poorly looking on Google. The doctor said if it was anything to worry about, then it would be golf ball sized and not pea sized. Am I being told the truth or should I be worried?

I'm also having night sweats and feeling breathless when doing exercise. The doc also reassured me that this is very normal and nothing to worry about.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Emily

  • Please can someone reply to me, I'm going out of mind

  • Unfortunately I can't say if it is or isn't something to be worried about but on a positive note your referal is in and what ever it is will be figured out and if needed treated, so your on the right path.  You could request bloods from your gp also to see if theres any viral or bacterial infection that's possible causing swollen lymph nodes while waiting for your appointment with the speaclist. X

  • I don't know what to believe. The doctor says he would be very shocked if it was anything serious, as they would be bigger, but unfortunately I don't have the best trust in doctors due to past failures and also wonder why the urgent referral if its really nothing to be too worried about? Other people I speak to tell me that its not normal for lymph nodes to be swollen at all, especially in 2 places. The doctor said today that the bloods had come back and all look fine but I will ring again tomorrow to see if they show an infection at all, thankyou. Would it be better of they did, meaning that would probably be why the nodes were swollen rather than anything else? Xx

  • Im currently in a similar situation where i have 6 now swollen in my groin 1 under each armpit and a lump on my sternum and rib and have been referred on also, my bloods came back clear, and have a few other symptoms. My bloods came back clear thats why they referred on,  i was told that if your not physically ill and your bloods show no signs of infection further investigation needs to be done, but more often than not its nothing serious. Id just advise you to keep check of the lumps notice any difference then contact your doctor and inform them of any changes. There's certain pathways GPS have to follow and these kind of referrals are always classed as 2 week urgent referals xx

  • Thanks for all your advice. I hope all goes well for you ️ do you mind me asking what yours feel like? Are they large? Mine are about pea sized but Google has terrified me xx

  • The one on my sternum and rib is the size of a 5p and hard, the ones in my armpits are pea sizes softer and move abit. Then the ones in my groin are all different some are pea size and others are tripple the size there all hard and fixed in place don't move. I was the same on Google, thats what made me check other areas, as i originally only noticed the one on my sternum because i had been having chest pain for nearly a year, then from that i found the others, i also have lost a stone in weight unintentionally within a short time, and suffer with fatigue and night sweats but never connected that at the start . I personally find trying to keep busy helps offer a distraction. I hope your appointment comes through quickly for you and you get some answers, will keep everything crossed for you xx

  • Thankyou again! I do need to keep busy, it's just so difficult as I can't concentrate on anything. I've woken up sweaty in the night for a while now but just put it down to hormones, although now I'm linking everything. Also breathlessness, but that could be due to my anxiety. The night sweats seem to have exasperated in the last week making me more paranoid, but now it's hard to differentiate between what could be serious and what it being caused my stress/anxiety and panick attacks. Last night I was soaking, had to take all my clothes off and almost passed out feeling dizzy. Not sure if that sort of thing can be caused by stress ‍♀️ I just wish they could see people sooner so we didn't have to wait around. That's the worst bit. Sending you positivity and wishes of good luck xx

  • Hopefully you don't have to wait to long, i was advised with the 2 week emergency referral there can still be a wait time a Littleover the 2 weeks but i received my appointment today for Monday and my referral only went in last Thursday so looks like there moving quicker so fingers crossed you get seen soon, stress and worry can cause symptoms also, but in situations like this is near impossible not to be stressed and anxious. I will keep everything crossed for good news for you x

  • Thankyou. They booked me an appointment for 5th April but I rang and asked for a cancellation slot and they had 2 tomorrow, so I'm going tomorrow at 10.30am now. Terrified but glad I don't have to wait as long xx

  • That's great news,  write down any questions you may have to take with you as nerves can make your mind go blank when there, I hope everything goes OK tomorrow x
