Breast dimples…watch and wait?

Hey guys, just looking for some advice.

I have 3 dimples on the underside of my breast. One looks like a thumb print shaped crater, and the other two look like shallow grooves which together form a line about 2 inches long. All of them are only visible when I raise my arm (but disappear when i lie down, and I can stretch them out - I'm hoping that's a promising sign?)

I’m 38, and my boobs are 38dd so quite big.

Trouble is, my GP says that, because I don’t have a lump, pain, nipple discharge/inversion nor any family history, we don’t need to worry, and can just check in with her again in 4 weeks to check the dimples haven’t changed.

Should I trust my GP, or would you push for a referal? I appreciate she is both a doctor, and a woman…so should know what she is talking about, but I’ve read so many stories about women who had breast dimples with no lumps, but still had cancer.

I guess what I’m asking is….what would you do?

  • Hello _driftwoodhearts_

I'm sorry to hear that you have some concerns about your breast health at the moment. It's good to hear that you've already seen the GP and that she didn't have any immediate cause for concern although it's understandable that you're still feeling anxious.

Many people find it helps to talk things through and I wonder if you might find it useful to chat through your concerns with one of our nurses? I'm sure they would be happy to offer any information, advice, and support they can. If you'd like to speak with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you're able to get some reassurance from your GP soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi sorry you find yourself on here. I would definitely push for a referral. My experience was one dimple on the top of my breast when I looked down I could see it but not all the time. My GP didn't think I had anything to worry about but she referred me as it was a change. I don't want to worry you as I know there ate other reasons for this happening but unfortunately for me it turned out to be early stage breast cancer. Hope you manage to get that referral to get checked and put your mind at ease. Always here if you need a chat. Xx

  • Thank you for the advice. I'm so please to hear you caught yours early!
I have seen my GP again and she has made a referral for me. 13 days to go.
Im feeling really frightened, I can't find anything online about people having multiple indentations and it being a benign cause. The more I think about it, the more I feel doomed to only one outcome.

I wish there were some characteristics published about  different kinds of dimples that I could reassure myself with...like with lumps, you'll often find info about what a sinister lump might feel like, vs a cyst. But with a dimple, it's just....bad. If that makes sense.

Anyway, I know I'm rambling. I'm trying to remind myself that IF this is cancer, it's one of the best cancers to have, because the treatment, funding, support and even prognosis are so good, so I'll be in good hands.

  • I think its good you pushed for referral. I got referred for a dimple on my breast last year, it only appeared when I did the hands on hip position. Breast surgeon did a full exam and I got an ultrasound and it was nothing; they said it seemed likely to be due to weightloss. Best of luck!

  • Glad you got the referral. I know it is hard but try not to worry as it could be absolutely nothing.

I ccouldn't find much online a out dimples either. It's very frustrating. I think the use of drawings are hopeless too and real images should be used.

Please let me know how you get on.

  • Hi,

I'm just wondering how you got on at your referral. I have identical symptoms to you and can't find much info online that is reassuring.

I hope you got on well and that it is nothing to worry about.

    Thanks

  • Hi Caro85. My news is a mixed bag.
I attended the appointment at the breast clinic and had a mammogram, ultrasound and manual examination and everything came back clear! But the consultant wanted to do a 3 month follow up to keep an eye on the dimples, he said it's purely precautionary and nothing to worry about!

4 weeks later I found a new dimple on the same breast, much deeper than the others and a lot more worrying in appearance. It looks like a big Y shape in the bottom of my breast when I tense my muscles. So I called the consultant's secretary and asked to bring my follow up forward. I was seen 2 weeks later.
The consultant did a quick check but not very thoroughly as he was more focused on my recent clear scans. He said he thinks my skin is attached to my chest muscle and that is causing the dimple, but I'm sure it's new!
He took a FNA biopsy, and I'm still waiting for results. It has been nearly 3 weeks.
So this worry about my breast dimples has been going on since March, and I still feel like I'm in limbo.
    I'm so tired.

I hope you get the answers you need sooner. Do you have an appointment yet?

  • Hi, am new here and just read your most recent post. I also had a follow up with a consultant at the breast clinic today about a dent on my breast. Mammogram and US were clear 6 weeks ago. He said he doesn't think its anything to worry about but keep an eye on it and if it changes or worsens to get referred again.  He's going to order me another mammogram for in a years time. To be honest, I dont feel very reassured by him. But not sure what more I can do.

  • Hi Cats2022. That's very much how I feel too. I don't think I'll be reassured by my biopsy result because it was just taken of a random section about 1cm from the dimple. There was no lump or anything specific to biopsy.
im worried I may have a deep tumour that might have been missed on mammo/USS because I have dense breast tissue.
I don't feel reassured...my dimple is too extreme! The doctor admitted himself that it is tethered. I don't know where to go from here?!
What is your dimple like? Mine is about 3cm x 3cm, it appears when I flex my chest muscle or push my arm firmly by my side. It forms an indented Y shaped crease and distorts the shape of the contour of my breast. (It's on the 5 o clock position on my left breast)
I can't accept that something this dramatic looking can be benign!

  • Hi _driftwoodhearts_ thank you for your reply. I'm sorry to hear that you are still waiting.

3 weeks seems very long to be waiting for biopsy results. No news is good news hopefully. The waiting is def the worst part.

I had my appointment this evening and thankfully the mammogram came back clear.

I hope you get good news soon.
