Lump in groin…lymph node, cyst or something else?

Hi all

I'm new here and just after some advice or similar stories to help calm my nerves a little.
Before Christmas I noticed a lump on my bikini line, it was quite red and inflamed and I put it down to an ingrown hair and thought nothing more of it. It went down and came back up again several times, and now the lump has pretty much stayed raised since then albeit smaller.

It's small, pea sized, quite hard/ rubbery and moveable. It does fluctuate in size, it can go down where it feels like it's barely anything then it can come up again to this size, or the size of a chickpea at biggest.

I went to the GP and they have referred me for an ultrasound and said nothing else about it. They didn't seem overly concerned but I'm still quite worried.
I don't have any pain in it so to speak, but I do find if I've squeezed it it can ache a bit.

I've never really had reactive lymph nodes before that I'm aware of, so naturally thinking the worst here
I don't have any other lumps along my groin or neck/armpits.

Has anyone had anything similar? My GP appointment was 2 weeks ago and still haven't had an ultrasound appointment through so it's making me feel worse and google more. I've got an 8 month old daughter and sometimes find myself spiralling thinking about the what ifs.

  • Hello Svmb90 and welcome to Cancer Chat,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. I hope you won't have to wait too long for your ultrasound appointment. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting to find out more.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. There are also helpful tips on this page on how to cope while waiting for important news.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi, im currently going through something similar, but I started with chest pain, nearly a year ago then a couple of weeks ago a hard lump appeared on my sternum then 2 swollen lymph nodes in my armpits then 5 in my groin over 4 days, i also have had weight loss of a stone within a few months and night sweats. Has your doctor recommended bloods mine did a full blood check including checking for any viral or bacterial infections and glandular fever, as that can cause them to appear. Once all that came back clear i was referred on to hematology under the 2 week pathway. Currently waiting to se a spealist, its good that they have you booked in for a scan,  if you haven't heard anything contact your hospital that will be doing it and ask about an appointment date and ask to be put on the list if any cancellations happen they will call you and hopefully get you seen faster.  I understand how scary this is as a mum myself to two young girl instantly your mind goes into overdrive and its hard to not think all the scary thoughts , a nurse I spoke with a week ago said to me keep pushing them, and dont feel like your bothering them, you need answers so keep on it. If your gp hasn't done bloods call them back and explain its still there you would like it looked at again and bloods to rule out and infection xx
