Stomach Cancer Symptoms

Hello. I can't believe I am typing this post :( I am 35 years old and a month ago I went to get out of bed when I felt a very sharp pain just below my left rib cage, the pain then dulled to more of a consistent discomfort but would get worse if I did certain things like bend down to pick something up or attempt to run. It seems to be aggrevated by movement in my abdomen. 3 days later, it was around 2pm when I realized I hadn't eaten but I wasn't hungry which is a big deal as I have always had a big appetite. That same night, I was laying awake in bed and my stomach was making some very loud growling noises and this happened so much it actually kept me awake for most of the night, I only ended up sleeping about 4 hours. These symptoms have not changed or eased since they started.

Around a week later, I started to get some difficulty swallowing. This has been intensifying to the point where even water now causes slight pain. I have also developed a productive cough, shortness of breath and a blocked nose that will not go away. I am burping and passing wind an awful lot.

I have visited my GP 3 times about this. The first time I was advised to take Omeprazole which has not made any difference. The second time I was advised the rib issue was likely a pulled muscle and the rest was likely stress. When I returned for a third time and explained I am getting extremely worried the GP ordered full blood work testing for various cancers and digestive organ function, I also had to provide stool samples to test for H Pylori and blood. The bloods were fine but haven't received stool results yet.

This week my breathing and difficulty swallowing got so bad I went to A&E. They did another blood test which came back alright and they took a chest x-ray which they said was fine. The Doctor there did say my lack of appetite and difficulty swallowing were things that needed to be investigated sooner rather than later so she has referred me for an urgent Endoscopy but she advised that due to Covid there is a backlog so it could take upto 2 weeks just to receive the appointment letter.

I don't know what else to do. I have a wife, 2 young children and she is due to give birth to our 3rd very soon. I am so scared this is something serious and I won't be there for them and every day that passes the risk increases.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thank you so much.

  • Hi there Dzr, nice to have you here!

I have quite similar symptoms to yours, with the gurgling stomach, loss of appetite, and I did on several occasions have trouble swallowing, which I later realised was a mental thing, and if I didn't focus on it, I could swallow fine, weird, I know. I also burp a ridiculous amount, and pass a lot of gas too!

You're definitely doing the right thing getting checked out, and absolutely the right thing with the Endoscopy, it's by far the best way to see what's really going on, but the chest x-ray showing nothing is a very very good sign, it's very rare to miss bad things on an x-ray, MRI or CT scan! Please keep us updated on how you're getting on! If I could give any advice it would be try not to worry, try stay as stress free as you can, a lot of your symptoms could be caused by stress, hopefully then endoscopy will show nothing and then you can tackle the stress head on!

    Hi.

I know most people on here are going through some kind of hardship so I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. I'm not medically trained and I don't mean to be insulting to those who are but I just know something is not right, I do not feel like myself. My absolute biggest concerns are the consistent stomach pain and lack of appetite, I have never lost my appetite. It's the consistency of the symptoms as well, they don't come and go they are always there and aren't improving :(

I know I'm not the only person who needs help and I'm happy I'm being referred but when the Doctor said it would take 2 weeks just to get the appointment letter to me my heart sank, it's already been a month since all this started and if this is something really bad I just feel like time is slipping away.

    Hey there.

I know that feeling all too well, medically trained professionals will say that if you feel like something is wrong, get it checked out, we all know our own bodies, so don't feel like you're insulting anyone! Some "good" news is that the stomach pain and lack of appetite are both very common symptoms of stress/anxiety, which could have been brought on by an original infection possibly? I haven't ever lost my appetite either up until I did, it's weird, very weird! Try keep positive, it's the best advice I can give, I'm sorry it's nothing amazing, but I'm not doctor, and wouldn't ever try diagnose someone on here, you're doing the right thing, and best of luck!

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it. I will do my best to stay positive. You mentioned you are having similar issues to me - have you figured out what is going on? I hope you feel better.

Sadly not, it started around 3-4 months ago now, not sure when exactly, but I haven't managed to figure out what is causing it, my best guess would be I got a pretty bad infection, lasting 3-4 weeks, which eventually stopped, but it has impacted my gut bacteria, and knocked off the balance, leading to the symptoms I now still have, and combined with stress, has been aggravating it!
