Melanoma worry - strange mole

Hi, I'm hoping some of you may be able to help put my mind at rest. I've had a mole on the side of my head all my life but in the last couple of months I'd noticed it had got slightly bigger, it is brown (different shades) with a white middle and has started to become itchy. I contacted my GP and she refered me to a dermatologist for it to be looked at. I'm already worrying about this as my dad died from melanoma at just 38 and I've read up on how it can be hereditary. My mum was told to keep an eye on my skin by a doctor when my dad was poorly when I was younger which has made me even more concerned.
What can I expect from seeing the dermatology appointment? Will they test it? I'm not sure my mind would be put at ease unless it is tested. or am I just over worrying?!

  • Hi Holly and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry for the worry this mole is causing but I'm glad you sort out medical advice and hopefully it won't be long until you see the dermatologist.

You can find out what may happen at your appointment on our website but hopefully some of our members who have been to dermatology will be along soon to share their experiences and advice.

If you'd like to discuss any of this with our cancer nurses, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Fingers crossed everything will be o.k Holly.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Steph,

Thankyou for replying! I got a call on Friday for a cancellation appointment on Saturday just gone, the dermatologist said she was concerned about it and given my family history has decided to have the mole removed and tested for melenoma.

Hoping I don't have to wait too long for the appointment to come through as I'm going out of my mind with worry now.

do you have an idea how long I'll be waiting, does it tend to be quite quick?

    thank you x

  • Hello Hollyb94,

I am not sure how long it will take for your appointment to come through - it might depend on the area where you live and hopefully coronavirus won't have affected the waiting times too much. Perhaps you could try and ring the hospital/your dermatologist and check with them how long it will take for the appointment to come through? Hopefully it won't be too long now before you get seen and have the mole removed. Feel free also to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - they may be able to tell you more about this. Their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

It sounds like you will be having an excision biopsy and you can read more about what to expect from this procedure on this page. Once you've had the mole removed, it should take up to two weeks to get your biopsy results.

I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Hollyb94, I'm sorry to hear what you're going through.  It's a worrying time.  Just wondering if you've heard anything yet regarding your biopsy appointment?  Try not to worry too much, if and it's a big if it is melanoma it may have been caught early.  My Dad also had melanoma 3 years ago (stage 2B) and I was diagnosed with stage 1A last November.  I've now had the wide local excision and the all clear - I will be checked every 3 months for approx 12-24 months.  My biopsy appointment was roughly 3 weeks after my first dermatology appointment so fingers crossed you'll hear something soon.  Take care of yourself and if you need to chat then come back on here. K x

  • Hi, unfortunately not heard anything yet but it hasn't even been a week since my dermatologist appointment so I didn't want to jump the gun after such a short amount of time. I'm sorry to hear about both your dad and your diagnosis but im glad you are on the mend now. Thank you for sharing your experience with me I'm hoping I will get my appointment through soon and get some closure either way and it's just on my mind every day worrying about it x

  • Hi. I understand how worried you must be, it's a horrible feeling waiting for appointments etc. I do hope you receive your appointment very soon and they can put your mind at rest. In the meantime try and stay calm and keep yourself busy. Take care and the very best of luck x
