3rd 2 week wait appt in a year

A little back story is probably needed here, as i mentioned in the title its my 3rd 2 week wait appt in almost exactly a year.

The 1st time I had a biopsy on a lump and was told it's not cancer but wasn't actually told what it was. 6 months later the lump had changed, the red patch grown bigger and so I was reffered again. Told it was an infection in the duct and my choices were to either leave it alone because antibiotics wouldn't work or to have it removed but this could possibly lead to more problems. The consultant said if I became symptomatic he would see me again but if there were no symptoms of concern it would be done as a normal referral.

Over the last 3 months i've had 3 lots of antibiotics due to it getting redder and changing (without ever being examined), there was definitely an infection because it came up and burst and that was when the GP said she wanted to have another look. When i saw her the doctor was concerned that although the infection was coming out, the breast changes were actually getting worse.

When i last saw the consultant at the hospital in November the skin changes were only above my nipple, but now they are below as well. My nipple is sinking further into the breast, size has increased again and my breast has what is almost a bruised appearance.

I don't know how I'm supposed to feel about it now, the 1st time i was scared and then my 2nd appt ended with me feeling reassured. Now I've been confused by the GP's concern and the need for another 2 week wait appt and especially tonight I'm starting to get anxious, wondering if it is possible that there is something more going on or whether the GP has just been over cautious.

  • Hello MH78,

What a stressful year it has been for you with three consecutive urgent referrals. I can understand though why they would want to investigate these changes and it's good that your GP is being so thorough. Even though you are going through a very anxious time right now, hopefully it will be third time lucky and you will finally get some definite answers.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • I am on my third two week referral in 10 months, they are happy to see you again if you are worried about changes, my last visit was two weeks ago when I was given tamoxifen a cancer drug for breast pain,  last week after asking my doctor about taking it with my clotting condition ect l had a call back from the surgeon. Who said don't take it l will see you again in 2 months. They have been really helpful and say come back anytime.

Crossing everything for you and hope it all goes well
