Referred for colonoscopy.

Hello, I'm a 23 year old woman and was hoping anyone could offer some advice.
Over the past 6 months I've had a lot of symptoms I thought would turn out to be IBS. However, my GP sent off my stool sample and my FIT test came pack positive 10.4 ug/g.

I have been urgently reffered for a colonoscopy so just waiting to hear when my appointment will be.

Of course since my FIT test came back positive I've been extremely anxious and thinking the worst. I also have a lot of symptoms of bowel cancer - but I know there's a few other diagnosis' with similar symptoms.

Has anyone had a positive FIT test and been absolutely fine?

many thanks x

  • At your age, bowel cancer would be very unlikely. And I think your FIT is only very marginally positive. I've read different numbers but I think it is often 10 they use as the cut off. Some people have results well over 100. And of course, the FIT only tests for blood in the stool. Many things can cause that, including very minor and common things like hemorrhoids.

I have not had a positive FIT test but I did have rectal bleeding, weight loss, trapped wind and some loose stools (maybe one or twice a week) last summer when I was 40. The consultant said that at my age, cancer would be the least likely of all the possible options and I would be "the unluckiest person in the world" if it turned out to be that. It turned out to be hemorrhoids (probably combined with the effects of thyroid medication and stress from the whole thing).
