Waiting times for breast clinic referrals Northern Ireland?

Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with the waiting times for a referral to any of the breast clinics in Northern Ireland.  I had a mammogram 4 weeks ago with a cancer charity screening service,  was informed 2 weeks ago that I needed to go breast clinic. Thought I would have heard by now so rang clinic this morning to be told I'm on a waiting list to  book an appointment ! My anxiety is increasing daily, our family history is poor, to say the least and the not knowing is hard going.

Anybody else any experiences in Northern Ireland with regards to breast clinic that they could please share?

Thank you x

  • That sounds like my experience l had a mammogram with the screening service on the Thursday and went to breast clinic last Monday the surgeon couldn't access the results, she said l would get them from the private service. The mammogram was actually taken in the breast clinic not a mobile van., l hope you are seen soon they are probably taking their time one service referring to the other, rather than the  GP making the appointment when you are seen and referred  in the surgery. If you don't hear shortly contact your doctor for advice.

  • Hi Susie, thank you for taking the time to reply . Hoe frustrating for you that your xrays weren't there, were you able to get any results from the clinic or do you have to go back again ? That's pretty terrible tbh. My xrays were supposedly to be sent from 'the big bus' on 28th February,  I had to chase this up though and weren't received by breast clinic until a week later (supposed to arrive on the same day you are referred) The booking appointment line tells me I'm on a waiting list to get a letter telling me to book an appointment! It's just the waiting game that's so difficult.  I really hope you are doing OK xx

  • I still haven't had my mammogram results now two weeks. At my breast clinic appointment 28 feb for Brest pain  l  was given tamoxifen a cancer drug, l don't have cancer so before taking it l asked my GP if l should as there's a big  clotting risk. I have a  blood clotting condition (sticky blood) and l have had a leg clot so l take a blood thinner. I asked my GP if she thought it was safe last Friday she contacted the breast team. I had a call back on Monday from my consultant apologising that she didn't know that l had a blood problem, clot,  ect and definitely don't take the tamoxifen return them to the pharmacy for destruction!  She's made a two month appointment to see her. That's good as they usually say you don't need surgery bye bye. Come back if things change. l have an open appointment at breast clinic and can ring to see them.
maybe leave it until Monday and then ring them back the waiting game is definitely not easy. I hope all is well when you are seen not all recalls are for lumps the consultant may need to examine you my friend had a similar recall like you and her biopsies were benign, they are going to see her in a year.
