PET scan for neck lump (all other tests inconclusive)

I have a painless lump on my neck which i first noticed in November 2021. I had an ultrasound scan a few weeks later and was told that it looked like an enlarged lymph node and told to come back for another scan in a month. At the 2nd scan i wad told that the lump looked abnormal and i needed a biopsy which they did there and then. I was told that the lump could either be a lymph node or a cyst but they weren't sure which. The biopsy came back as inconclusive so i was sent for a CT scan. Unfortunately this also didn't give a clear indication as to what the mass might be, or whether it is benign or malignant.

My consultant then said that I would need surgery to remove the lump, and it would be sent off for analysis to get a diagnosis. In the mean time he suggested a PET scan, which i had a few days ago. I was just wondering what the PET scan might show? Also, does anyone have any experience of having so many tests which have had inconclusive results? It's been such a rollercoaster of emotions and really hard to deal with at times.

  • Hi HH30,

I noticed you were wanting to find out more about PET scans so I just thought I'd include some information we have on our website about this test. I hope this makes things a bit clearer but if you'd like to have a chat with one of our cancer nurses about this, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They are very informative and will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease.

Many of our members know how tough it can be to receive inconclusive test results so you're not alone and I'm sure some of them will be stop by soon to offer you their support and advice.

In the meantime, we're thinking of you HH30 and have our fingers crossed everything will be o.k.

    Take care,
