Seeking Advice For Asbestos Exposure Anxiety

Hello All,

I recently had our garage roof replaced. The contractor removed the old material (potentially concrete asbestos shingles) and threw it down on tarps placed on either side of the garage, much of the material did break. I donned a respirator and other proper PPE to hose down and bag the debris myself. The neighbours were notified prior to the work and kept their windows closed. The work created a large amount of dust but luckily it seemed to dissapate in the wind.

The ground surface is grass on one side of the garage and gravel on the other. I noticed a few days later that there were many small pieces of what seemed to be brittle felt underlyment paper throughout the yard (mostly embedded in the gravel and there is almost no way to get it out). I donned the respirator and collected as much of the material as possible on a few occasions and upon further reserach this felt-like material may also contain asbestos and is potentially in small pieces throughout the yard. Is this reason to worry? I am hoping that the small amounts of remnants would dissapate in the wind/ambient air and would not attribute to an elevated exposure.

I am very nervous and anxious that this 1.5-2 weeks of exposure so far to these remnants is something to be concerned about. I am a male in my late 30s. Thank you for your help.

  • Hi SteveH14,

It is unlikely to be of too much cause for concern - typically the risk is only greater when there is significant exposure over a longer period of time, ususally over years. For yourself you mention it is very recent and also it is outdoor which will reduce any risk.

We get a lot of concerns about asbestos exposure on the forum, so if you remain concerned at all I would encourage you to search the forum (using the button in the blue bar above) for other relevant discussions - you should hopefully find further reassurance there.

    All the best,
