Wondering if I have Bowel/Colon Cancer

Hi, this is my first post on here, I'm 22 and I just wanted to put my symptoms out there in case someone's been going through something similar, as this has been invading my every thought for the past 4/5 weeks.

My symptoms are, I've had visible mucus in my stool for about 2 years, I've always ignored it as it's just been mucus by itself and nothing else.

Around 5 weeks ago I started getting MUCH more mucus in my stool, often more mucus than stool, and visible bright red blood in every stool since then. I've never had constipation in my life, yet 5 weeks ago it suddenly started, for days and days at a time, now I swing between diarrhoea and constipation. I've been feeling very weak and fatigued for a few weeks now, and I have been losing weight, however, I have been actively trying to lose weight with a caloric deficit. I've been seeing my stool come out as very thin and sometimes flat. So far no stomach cramps other than during diarrhoea.

I've been having lots of blood and stool tests, and my white blood cell (lymphocytes) count is high (15-16) and the stool test came back quite high for inflammation in my bowel.

I've got my colonoscopy in under 2 weeks, and my mum was diagnosed with Crohn's 2 years ago.

I've talked to my mum about my symptoms and hers and they seem to differ quite a lot, and I've been googling my symptoms a lot (I know I shouldn't) but at this moment everything seems to be pointing to colon cancer.

Has anyone had similar symptoms, and if so, what was the diagnosis?

This may be completely unrelated, but for the past week, my ab muscles have been hurting a lot??? Like I've done hundreds of sit-ups the day before, but I've been completely sedentary this past week (I used to do a lot of home workouts and sit-ups a few months ago, so it got to the point where I'd no longer get sore muscles, but I've stopped all exercising for a month now) it's very sudden and strange, but not sure if it's related or not.

Thanks so much for reading! x

  • Hello there, Autopilot!

I'm in an almost identical situation to you, I'm 21, have seen bright red blood with some mucus, and have had abdominal cramps/tenderness for quite some time now! I've just been tested for Coeliac disease, which came back negative by a large margin, and now onto other tests! I'll have to see what my doctor wants. The good news is that it is very very very unlikely to be bowel cancer, especially if your stool test didn't show high levels of blood in your stool! I have this weird thing where my bowels rumble non-stop sometimes, it used to happen the whole time but now it happens less often, which is nice! I too have diarrhoea, which is awful! A lot of both of our problems I believe are caused by anxiety, Especially the weakness and fatigue you described, but you could also put that down to a caloric defecit, but most likely a combination of both!

I'm glad you've gotten a colonoscopy, I think my doctor wants to do that after some routine blood tests, they are afterall the gold standard!

The best advice I could give is try to remain calm, try and focus on the chances of it being bowel cancer are incredibly, and I mean incredibly slim, and if on the extreme off chance that it is, the chances are it's stage won't be advanced! It's a very slow aging cancer.

Best of luck to you man, and be sure to keep us updated, a positive out come would benefit a lot of people on here, most often those with clear results don't come back!
