Colonoscopy biopsies

Hi,

I had a colonoscopy today after experiencing rectal bleeding. The consultant took biopsies from 4 areas and also found haemorrhoids. I'm not sure if these biopsies are routine or because he saw something abnormal? He seemed quite relaxed about everything so I assume he didn't see anything suspicious but I was just wondering if any of you got results showing cancer from biopsies despite a seemingly clear colonoscopy?

Thanks in advance x

  • Hello Sunnylala and welcome to our online community.

As you'll see on our website, biopsies are standard procedure as the endoscopist removes tissue samples (biopsies) if they see any growths (polyps). I hope this helps ease your mind but if you'd like to discuss this in more detail with one of our cancer nurses, you can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Hopefully some of our members will share their experiences with you soon but in the meantime we're thinking of you and hope the biopsy results bring good news when they come through.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi

Ive had Biopsy's taken a few times and they will usually say if there is anything sinister as they can't hide it, the fact that they said nothing is a good thing. I've also had Polyps removed that have turned out to be nothing but they said they looked normal at the time. Good luck but I wouldn't be too worried think you would have been given an indication at the time if they were worried.

  • Hi, I had a colonoscopy 3 days ago and 8 biopsies were taken. I wasn't expecting that so I'm a bit nervous as to why.

  • Hi SheSings and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry you weren't made aware that biopsies may be taken during your colonoscopy. As you can see in my previous reply this is standard procedure but if you're worried you're very welcome to talk things through with one of our nurses. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040. They're very insightful and will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease.

We're thinking of you SheSings and will have our fingers crossed for a good outcome.

    Kind regards,
