FIT, now going for colonoscopy!

Took a FIT recently because of constipation. The doctor told me the test came back 'scored' as 14...the cut off is 10. Now being sent for colonoscopy! Is the score anything to worry about as this whole thing has terrified me?

  • Hi,

I am by no means an expert, but having done a bit of research over the past few weeks, I have found that all a FIT test shows is that there is blood somewhere in your bowels. This blood can be microscopic and can be there for many reasons - haemorrhoids, IBD, a small polyp etc. It is so sensitive that even swallowed blood from a tooth can return a positive test.

If you do a search on this site you will see lots of posts about positive FIT tests, many with numbers much higher than yours (in my family member's case, the number was nearer to 190).

So yes, 14 is over the cut off but only just!

Try not to worry (easier said than done!), I think GP's refer any positive FIT tests further in order to investigate and treat if needed.
