Doctor told me to come back in 4 weeks is this normal?

Hi all,

I've been worried sick for a couple of days so thought I'd post as everyone is so helpful.

I'm 31, was laying in bed and felt a noticible lump in left boob when on my side. I check boobs weekly and this was new to me. I waited a couple days.

Fast forward those 2 days and my partner confirmed he could also feel it so next morning got myself together and phoned the doctor - burst into tears which is why I think the receptionist got me in bless her!

Anyway, doctor confirmed she could feel a lump too. I also have some pulling on the bottom of my boob, however she said nothing seemed tethered to it so not feeling too worried about that.

She told me to take evening primrose and wear a sports bra and come back in 4 weeks to review, she booked the appointment in. Said if it went away we would move to telephone app.

Is this right? I am reading conflicting info on the web and obviously don't want to doubt the doctor and I know they're really busy.

Can anyone advise if this is normal? I have family history which I told her (dad's sisters all had breast cancer, 2 passed away), and my great aunt had it too. She said it could be fibrous tissue but obviously could not diagnose that. The more I think about it the more I'm worried!

Thanks for reading x

  • Hello Spoons90 and a big welcome to Cancer Chat,

You did well to phone the doctor after noticing this lump in your left breast. It sounds like the doctor wants to wait a few weeks to check how things develop. I am not sure whether this is standard procedure but perhaps you could try and see another GP just to get a second opinion on this? You can find out more about getting a second opinion on this page

If you don't manage to speak to another doctor about this, I would keep the appointment she booked in for you and even if you felt the lump had gone away, a face to face appointment might be better so that she can double check this is the case.

I hope that you get to talk to another GP soon just to get a different perspective and the reassurance that this is the best course of action at this stage.

Best of luck and best wishes,

  • [@Spoons90]‍  I'm sorry you are going through this.

I have had a few lumps in my time and have a similar family history to you. I think your GP will be wanting to see if your lump is hormone related. They normally like you to have had four weeks between finding the lump and having biopsies to make sure it's nothing to do with your period.

My advice would be to keep an eye on it and go back at four weeks if it's still there or you have any concerns.

If you have any questions or worries message me . It's hard dealing with the unknowns but we are all here together

  • Hi,

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. That's reassuring. I'm taking the primrose and wearing a sports bra as she advised so I'll just keep an eye on it as you say. It probably is absolutely nothing but as you say it's just not knowing what it is.

I hope you have a lovely week, and thanks again, I feel less anxious about it.
