Concerns about lymphoma

Hi all,

Im a 22 year old male, who was reffered to ENT for a swollen lymph node in my neck. Grade 2: 1.5cm x 1cm, mobile and non tender. I had an ultrasound carried out around 3 years ago and it was deemed to be fine and no further action, put it down to EBV (Epstein-barr Virus).

Well, the swelling still hasn't gone down, and i've gotten gradually worse over the past few months. I started university in september of 2021, and started getting very aggressive night sweats, i mean i would wake up and my bedding down to the mattress would be soaked. this happened for about 4 weeks straight. I started getting random fevers on a night that i couldn't explain as well. I get very short of breath from doing easy tasks and i dont feel like a normal 22 year old. I've started getting really prone to infections, over the past 5 weeks ive had around 4, all in which have had to be treated with antibiotics or steroid cream. I stand up and go dizzy, however blood tests ruled out anemia. I had a blood film completed which did show "occasional reactive lymphocytes" which cant be explained either.

I really do think theres something wrong with me, but the ENT wont do a biopsy since the Lymph nodes look benign. Is there a chance this could be lymphoma or something else? Bare in mind these nodes have been swollen for almost 3 years and literally no professional has given me a reason as to why, they always say its after an infection.

Really appreciate anyone sharing any similar concerns or stories, not to look for a diagnosis but just some advice on whether to push for more tests like a CT or Biopsy or just leave it.

Thanks :)

  • Hello GrantW and a warm welcome to our forum,

I am sorry to hear that the ENT won't do a biopsy and I can understand why this is causing you to worry especially as these lymph nodes have been swollen for three years. It is reassuring though that the lymph nodes look benign but if you feel you would like to discuss the possibility of having additional tests, perhaps it would be a good idea to get a second opinion. You can find out more about this on this page

I hope you can talk to another specialist about your concerns soon and also that you will hear from other members of the forum who have been in a similar situation before.

    Best wishes,
