Colon & rectal cancer fears

Hey everyone, I hope you're all keeping well.

Just on here to share my experience so far and seek some thoughts.  I'm a 33 year old male.  I've always had IBS-D, usually from stress and spicey / oily foods.

Since about November - December 2021 I started experiencing the odd random bout of explosive diarrhea, maybe once a week or something, and only one visit to the bathroom when I did.  Around these time I was experiencing extreme work stress and changing my diet to lots of vegtables and stuff (my diet has been all over the place).  The 'sensation' of these bowel movements felt like more a gas pressure pain on my lower left hand side, a bit different to what I'd had before with IBS which was a standard ache all over.  Between these bouts my bowel movements would go back to being completely normal shape / size stools, no blood or anything.  From about mid december it continued to be completely fine.

Since January 2022 to present, about every 2/3 weeks I would get a single random bout of explosive diarrhea. Usually about an hour after eating, on two occaisions after ordering the same kebab takeaway!   Inbetween these bouts my bowel movements resume normality.   I wasn't worried about blood until paid closer attention to seeing a couple of tiny bright red / orangey solid spots in my stool, some are so tiny I just can't see what they are. But on most times this happens one will be bigger and will be vegtable skin looking thing. Prodding them they appear solid and move around, not liquid. Does blood appear like this?

Seperatly to this I do know that I have haemorrhoids, I've had painful lumps before that have bled over the TP, and the odd occasional mini cut sensation when I wipe, which will produce blood - not sure if that's related to the thing I mentioned above.

Long story short and if you're still with me, after being on the train the other day after an amount of stress and excitment that brought on one of my explosive sessions - I rang the doctor.  He wants me to do a stool sample to look for infection which he suspects, which I've done and jsut waiting.   A negative result and he'll have me do a blood stool test next.

I'm extremely concerned about having rectal or bowel cancer - I've googled the issue to death since Jan and I've convinced myself that this is what it is.   Thank you for reading, just wanted to get some thoughts on whether it might sound like something other than rectal cancer?

  • I'd say cancer is probably unlikely at your age. I had a colonoscopy last summer, at 40, and the consultant told me that at my age, cancer was the least likely of all the possibilities and that I'd be "the unluckiest person in the world" if it turned out to be that. Add on the fact that you are younger than me and that you have IBS-D which could play a part in explaining a lot of your symptoms, I think the odds are very much against cancer.

Solid orange and red spots in your stools sound like food - carrots, tomatoes, that sort of stuff. Doesn't sound like blood to me at all. From what I've read if you can separate them from the stool, they are unlikely to be blood, that blood will just smear and won't come away. It is pretty common to find bits of food in your stool.

So could it be just stress and/or spicy food triggering your IBS-D? I'm no expert, but going on what you've said, that would be my guess. Or of course, there is the possibility of the infection. Both of those are probably many times more likely than cancer. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's also have similar symptoms to cancer and are more common among people in their 30s.
