Waiting time for Melanoma Biopsy 6-7 weeks?

I had 2 moles removed after an urgent referral to dermatology. Has anyone else had to wait 6-7 weeks for a result. 21 days have passed since my biopsy I phoned today to see if the results have come through from the Lab and was told it would be at least another 3 weeks possibly 4. How can this be right? Surely any delay is bad?

  • Hello Scotland63,

That sounds like a long time to have to wait for biopsy results. It is mentioned in our page on the excision biopsy that it normally takes up to 2 weeks to get your results. You did well to phone them to find out what is going on and I am sorry that there have been delays in the process and you have been told that it would be another 3 or 4 weeks. Have they given you a reason for this prolonged waiting time?

I really hope you get your results soon and some definite answers as it must be so hard to have to wait all this time. I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much until you get your full results. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and experienced similar biopsy delays and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine and that you will receive your results soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi there. Where about in the UK do you live?

im in Northern Ireland, I had my excision on the 14th feb and have to go back on the 28th March to get my results. I just assumed with the back log of covid things are running a bit behind? Either way the wait is mental torture.
