Pain above right breast and down right arm

Sorry this is a bit of a long one.

A few weeks ago I had swelling above my right breast but below my collarbone towards my armpit. Over that weekend the pain got worse in my shoulder and down my arm to the point where I couldn't lift my arm.

The pain has eased and the swelling has gone down. I have pain going sort of from my nipple upwards and in my hand too.

I saw the GP who referred me for an ultrasound and said it was a lipoma but was very dismissive of the pain. He then called me in again to say that they wouldn't do an ultrasound as thats not the standard practise anymore and examined me again and said that it's a lipoma.

I have a family history of breast cancer and am feeling a bit dismissed as I've been researching lipomas and there shouldn't be any pain and it just doesn't seem consistent with my symptoms. I'm still having pain 6 weeks later.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice and if it's worth getting a second opinion. I'm not sure if I'm overreacting due to my family history.

  • Hi Jasmin18,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand your concerns, and I'm sure it must be a little confusing to have had the change of approach and potential uncertainty of this.

If the doctor had any further concerns, I'm sure they would have referred you. However if you would like to then it is possible to get a second opinion and we have some information about doing this on our website here.

If you feel you'd like to chat to someone about this, you are welcome to give our nurses a call to see what they think. You can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

    Wishing you all the best,
