Borderline changes and HPV Positive

I received a letter a few days ago (about four weeks after my smear test) explaining that my smear was abnormal and I have tested positive for high risk HPV and borderline changes in squamous cells? This is my first smear test and I am only 25. I don't have any symptoms. I've received another letter today saying my colposcopy is booked for next week and I am freaking out. I can't understand why my colposcopy would be arranged so soon unless they think there is something seriously wrong, I thought people had to wait weeks for this if there was only borderline changes? The nurse who did my smear test said everything looked normal and healthy down there too, I honestly just want to break down and cry I can't help but think the worst now.

  • Hey hun I had the exact same experience on my first smear 2 years ago I was absolutely petrified convinced I had cancer . Low grade changes and HPV infection.

I went for my colcoscopy a few weeks after receiving my letter where they thought they could see slight abnormal cells to which they biopsied and it turned out on the biopsy my HPV infection had cleared and no abnormal cells .  I had a smear the following year all clear and I am now discharged back to routine screening.

I can remember the horrendous feeling reading that letter and waiting for my colposcopy and I wouldn't wish that on anyone so the point of my reply is just to say try not to worry I can't say your experience will be the same as mine but everything turned out ok for me as I'm sure it will you.

Even high grade changes are not cancer my mum and sister have both had the high grade changes and they lazor them off there and then at colposcopy also they will tell you at colposcopy if anything looks abnormal my nurse was lovely..

I hope this brings you some comfort

    Take care x
