Fibroid or Colorectal Cancer?!?

Hi All,

I'm having trouble at the moment getting my GP to listen to me. I'm worried that my symptoms might be colorectal cancer and she in convinced it is my fibroid causing problems.
it all started on the night of the 28h December when I was woken with sudden pelvic and back pain. On the 29th I had an episode of blood in the stool. I went to the GP and she prescribed suppositories for piles. Since then the pain is continues every day and night. I'm not sleeping at all and it has all gone on for 9 wks now! I've been back numerous times, and each time I tell her that I'm worried. She sent me for an U/S which showed the fibroid has not grown (I've had this fibroid for at least 11 years when it was discovered when I was pregnant with my first child). The pain is on the right side of the pelvis around the hip and into the lower back. I also have pain under my ribs and around Into the back on the right side. I'm having awful gas pains and have the odd twinge elsewhere in the abdomen, but most on the right side. I've bought two stool test kits, both of which were positive for occult blood.
I'm due to have a fibroid embolisation as soon as I get to the top of the waiting list and my GP just sees this as a target for the solution and is prescribing painkillers until then.
I'm terrified that she is assuming it's the fibroid as note easy solution and I'm convinced it's something worse!!

I am 42 and have an 8 yr old and an 11 year old and I'm so worried about their future if I'm not about!!

Does anyone have any advice? Can I insist she refer me for a colonoscopy or at least carry out a proper stool test?

I'm aware everyone in the NHS is stressed and tired and fed up due to covid,  but I need an answer to this as I am just in limbo, in pain convinced I'm really Ill!!

Thanks. X

  • Hello RXD,

I am sorry to hear about these issues you've been having and I can understand why you are feeling worried about these symptoms. It sounds like your GP is pretty sure this is all linked to your fibroids and that you are not totally convinced and worry there is something else going on. Perhaps to give you peace of mind, it would be a good idea to talk to another GP about this? You can read more on this page about getting a second opinion. You could mention that it would reassure you to be considered for a colonoscopy and ask whether you could have a stool test.

It is hard to feel left in limbo and I can completely understand why you would want a clear answer to this. I hope that you manage to talk to someone about your worries very soon and that they give you some clarity on this.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lucie,

Thanks for replying and for your support.

I've seen my GP today and she has finally agreed I shouldn't be in constant pain for this long with the fibroid. She's given me a stool test to send off and depending on the results of that I may need further investigation.

    Many Thanks again.
