Breast biopsy results

Hi am new to this but felt I needed to write.

I am 47 and have a history of fibroadenomas, I have had 3 operations over the years to remove 4 lumps. Last time being 2016. I found a lump in November and went to the Dr and was referred. I was meant to have the appointment week before Christmas but I went for my booster the day before and felt really ill with it. Knowing the process of my local breast unit I didn't think I could hang around for 4 hours so I changed the appointment with the next available being January 26th. Little annoyed with myself with having to wait so long but didn't feel worried as believed it to be another fibroadenoma.

So I goes for my appointment, while examing me the consultant found another lump in my other breast  goes downstairs to get a mammogram and then ultra sound.

I was watching the ultrasound screen and when it rolled over the new lump it looked like a fibroadenoma. When they rolled over the original lump, it looked like bubbles you get when you blow down a straw. (Only way I can think of to describe it !) The radiographer and nurse were all chatty and a biopsy was taken of both and then was sent back upstairs to see the consultant. Before I got a chance to see him I was asked to go back downstairs where I had another ultrasound where they put a marker in the original lump, the nurse said to me as she was dressing me that the radiographer would of worried herself if she hadn't done that. Then another mammogram to check marker in correct place then back upstairs  where I saw the consultant. He said the new lump they believed to be a fibroadenom, due to it only being 2.5cm they probably wouldn't operate, and the original lump was indeterminate. The results should be back 7/10 days and they would write to me.

Well when it got to 2 weeks I phoned the unit and was put through to the consultants secretary who told me they were discussing my case on Monday 14th.

Still hearing nothing  I called again today where the secretary told me she has typed my letter up but needs to be signed off by the consultant and she couldn't  tell me anything else.

I'm really worried now as having had 3 ops I've always known the procedure, ive never had a marker before. am I worrying over nothing ? The fact the secretary wouldn't tell me anything is making me think the worst.

I've been googling ultrasound pics and self diagnosing myself. I just want to know and am making myself really stressed over it.

Thanks

  • Hello Kst47

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some more concerns about your breast health recently. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things.

The vast majority of people seen in breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately searching google for information often leaves people with no answers and more anxiety so please do try to avoid searching online if you can.

Many people find this period of waiting for results and information to be a difficult time and often it can help to talk things through with someone. If you've not yet had your letter from the hospital, or you have and you'd like to speak with someone, you're most welcome to give our team of nurses a call. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040. I'm sure they will be happy to listen and offer any advice and support that they can.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
