Galactocele in breast that won't drain. Is this normal?

After finding a lump in the lower part of my left breast, I had my appointment at the breast clinic nearly three weeks ago where I was told they were 'pretty sure' it was a galactocele. They numbed me and then tried to aspirate the lump but no milk/fluid came out whatsoever. I was told I'd have to go back in 6-8 weeks. Whilst leaving I asked if it was anything to worry about for now and the lady said 'I don't think it anything to worry about at all but I would like to see you again'

I am sure for most people this would have been a satisfactory visit but I think I am suffering with chronic post partum anxiety (I had my baby girl 11 weeks ago) and just cannot shift the feeling that they have misdiagnosed me. The lump seemed to disappear for a few days but has come back the same size, if not bigger and of course I feel like im now experiencing multiple other symptoms such as a dull ache, dizziness etc!  I am not breast feeding, and I never did but my milk did come in around 3 weeks post partum (I ended up having a ceserean) so I'm wondering if it's even possible that it's a galactocele?

I'm going back for another appointment next week as there's no way I can cope with the not knowing for another six weeks. Just wondering if there is anybody else out there who has had a galactocele that wouldn't drain? Trying my absolute best to be positive and trust in the doctors but these hormones are making it hard work!! I pray that it's nothing serious.

Thanks in advance xx

  • Hello LucyT7654

I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with some health concerns at the moment, especially as this is a time when you should be able to enjoy being with your new baby.

It's good to hear that the Consultant at the breast clinic didn't feel there was anything particularly concerning but that they're going to follow this up for you.

We know that for many people waiting for tests and results can be a really difficult time. Add into that maybe some postpartum anxiety and it's understandable that you're struggling at the moment. Please do get in touch with your GP or chat with the health visitor about how you're coping in general. They will be best placed to offer you some support and advice on this particular issue. Hopefully getting a better handle on your anxiety will in turn improve some of the other symptoms that you're experiencing.

If you'd like to chat with one of our nurses about your breast health concerns you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. Hopefully your appointment next week will bring some answers and further reassurance.

I hope things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi i have the exact same and currently 7weeks pp. they managed fo get milk out of mine!
I know your post is older but can i ask whay yours ended uo being/ happening? Were you breast feeding at the time?

    thank u xx

  • Ah amazing that they could get milk out for you! Mine actually ended up being a fibroadenoma- I had a biopsy to confirm this as the lump didn't disappear at all- it actually got a little bit bigger! They haven't done anything with the lump now- I still have it now. It gets quite tender during the time of the month but other than that I try to put it to the back of my mind! I wasn't breastfeeding at the time of finding the lump!

Hope it all sorts itself out for you :)

    Take care :) xx
