Dark brown stool and back pain

Hi, im a 26 year old female and I was having mucus in my stool that was varying from quite a lot to a little bit with pains when I eat and back pain that would come and go and I felt like I could never fully empty my bowel, so I went to the doctors and she examined me said there's nothing up my back package all completely normal but sent off for a stool sample called Faecal calprotectin to check for inflammation, the stool sample came back normal so I felt relieved. I no longer get pains when I eat and the back pain is a lot better. I eat a lot of Weetabix because I enjoy it and sometimes eat 3 bowls a day instead of meals which I know is bad but I struggle with an eating disorder and the Weetabix are low in calories and contain a lot of fibre which I thought would help my bowels. I took a laxative last night and the 3 poops I have had since have been very dark brown with a little mucus and they seem quite hard but not solid. I suffer with extreme health anxiety and now I am worried that the colour of my stool im now having could be caused by old blood coming from my bowel. Does anyone know if Faecal calprotectin stool samples would detect bowel cancer? I am really worried and feel like the doctor could of missed something or that the tests are not accurate. Please can someone help me I feel like I'm losing my mind I am constantly analysing my poop to the point I will put gloves on and inspect it with a torch light it was the colour of dark chocolate with some parts lighter brown

  • Hey Blondegirl!

So I'm no doctor, but I do believe that calprotectin does indeed detect bowel cancer, obviously no test is as good as a colonoscopy, but both the FIT and Calprotectin test are very very good, they will detect the large majority of cancers, I believe the FIT is a bit better, and the main reason Calprotectin is used is to screen for IBD, such as Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's! If you're worrying is getting the better of you, I'd recommend asking for an FIT stool test, and if that doesn't settle your mind, you could request a colonoscopy!

I'm going through something similar to you, I done an FIT test which came back negative, and around the same time I was told I had haemorrhoids, I'm also roughly the same age as you at 21! The odds are largly in our favour so I wouldn't worry to much, however I know that is far easier said than done, I know my anxiety drives me crazy some nights!

As for the colour varience, I think that's normal, for years, almost as long as I can remember some of my stools have been half darker, half lighter, not all my stools, but some of them, I think it's just the moisture content in different parts of the stool!
