Doctor told me I probably have blood cancer before 2ww ref

Sorry in advance for the  long story I just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience to the below please.

This happened all so suddenly. I had a sore throat a few weeks ago and also had bad night sweats at that point for about 4/5 weeks. The Dr said my throat wasn't too sore and took some bloods which were normal.

Exactly 2 weeks ago today I went for a run and 30 mins after I'd finished I had bad neck pain which got worse over the next two days and was inflamed. Went to urgent care and was told it wasn't too serious, probably caused by a neck spasm and to  take painkillers etc and continue as normal.

After a week the pain and swelling was only slightly better so I was prescribed Naproxen which I've been taking for 1 week. 4 days ago the swelling on my neck really increased and is really noticeable, it's like a big solid mass on one side of my neck and movement in one side is really restricted and I'm not sleeping at all with this and sweats.

I went to see the nurse 4 days ago and she arranged a 2ww referral and took some more bloods. The results came back as abnormal and I saw the Dr today who looked over my neck and body etc and said that my white blood cell count is very high in about 6/9 measures they do and I also have inflammation markers. She quite directly told me she thinks it's most likely blood cancer, but obviously further tests will establish this.

I know doctors wouldn't just tell me this if they didn't have good reason. Terrified. Can't believe that in the space of 11 days my bloods have changed so rapidly. I thought I'd sprained my neck and now to be told this.

  • Hello FayeTy,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat!

It's good that you went to see the nurse and that she has arranged this referral for you. I am sorry to hear that the blood results came back abnormal and your white blood cell count is very high. I can understand you are feeling so worried after your doctor told you this but as she said further test results will be needed to establish this so try and take one day at a time if you can while you are waiting for these important results.

I am keeping everything crossed for you! Keep us updated if you get a chance when you get all your results. I hope that you will hear from other members of the forum who have been in a similar situation and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
